Copford v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 21 Apr 2018 at 12.30pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 3 runs

Match report The season began with a trip in bright sunshine to the pictorial setting of Copford. Some selection challenges saw a team much changed from the end of the previous year with stalwarts Jenkin, Thomas, JP, Harry, Donald and Sharpe in the firsts and other absentees including East the Older/Uglier, Percival and Gravell to name but a few. Debuts were handed to promising young seamer Cameron Towers, everyones favourite Underwood (Ben) and a return from the wilderness of Busy (not so little) Mann.
After winning the toss new Captain East JR decided to field and an opening attack with a combined opening of 30 were greeted by an explosive start. The Copford batsmen regularly targeted an small boundary often miscuing for maximums. Young Cameron Towers bowled well and picked up 2 early wickets before the stylish Bell and Reid built a formidable partnership, at a decent lick. East turned to the old guard of Gauke and himself to try and stem the flow of runs. The rate slowed slightly but both batsmen were well set and tucked in after drinks, Ironfist in particular getting no leeway. East and Gauke returned, with East picking up 2 wickets in one over but Bell continue to look imperious and Copford passed 300, with Bell dispatching the last ball of the innings for a monstrous leg side 6.
Talk over a sparse tea was that 314 was very competitive! Towers was the highlight of the bowling display but despite some mediocre ground fielding at times the team stuck at their task well and hoped that some of the top order could get some runs of their own.
Snorey and Mann began the response well for Flopdock. Both driving with aplomb. Snorey reached 23 before trying to run Busy out and add another notch to his coffin. unfortunately it backfired and he was on his way. Busy was joined by Mexome. After getting himself in Mex began finding the boundary with regularity, swatting some loose bowling over the short boundary. Mann continued to look in complete control as he caressed the ball to all parts, mixing glorious drives, pulls and leg glances with aplomb. The brilliant partnership came to a close as it neared 150 as Mex edged behind, leaving 100 required of 11 overs.
The non retired Reg Hollis and Busy continued to tick the runs over and with 3 overs remaining 28 were required. As Busy lifted the second ball into orbit over long on thoughts of a Copdock victory were in everyones mind. Unfortunately as we dared to dream Busy missed one as he looked for the boundary again, falling for a quite magnificent 165. Bouyed by the wicket of Mann the Copford bowlers, support by some brilliant ground fielding tightened the screw and despite Reg's best effort held on to win by 3 runs.
A great game, hopefully the first of many this year.

SC Strawberry - Ironfist for a Sharpe-esque blooper
Sombrero - Busy Mann - deserved to be on the winning side
