Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 1st XI v Sudbury on Sat 05 Jul 2008 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 64 runs (incomplete scorecard)

Match report A big game against Sudbury loomed this weekend and the weather looked poor. Rick Jones and Chezzer had put in a fantastic effort and pitch was great and dry despite a huge amount of heavy rain.

We had discussed what to do all week and had decided if we won the toss to make them bat and chase. Eek won the toss and we batted first !!! It was overcast and their strength was their seamers, Jenko was delighted.

Having changed his pants twice, Jenko and Archie opened up against Jon Kent and got us off to a great start. Jenko pulled and cut his way to a stylish, eyes closed 57. Archie continued to look like some sort of demi-god and stroked his way to 38 before dying a poor, poor death as his slapped a waist high full toss straight at mid wicket.

Sharpe came and went, a kamikaze run out a specialty of Reuben and he was gone for 3. Howard Knights, who turned up late, not being able to pull himself away from re runs of the Poddington Pea's on Nicklelodeon, was then caught behind for 7 and the wheels looked as though they may be coming off. Chris Swallow and Nose returned some order to proceedings. Chris Scored 20 before Martin White, in a throw back to Ron Earl days of old, adjudged him LBW. Only the third LBW he's ever given. And Nose a brave and courageous 17 ( including a simply stunning extra cover drive ) before he was undone by a rip snorter from Kent and caught behind, most other would have missed it!

This left Pope and Thomas together. Huge T, after his portion of mushrooms, was in full Viking mode and went berserk. He pulled, cut and smote Kent all around Copdock for a highly entertaining 33. When he was out Deon went in for the last 3 overs and took 28 from the final over. This made me look like an idiot as I told Greggy he was a non-er with the bat!

Copdock reached 231 for 7. Eek and Burch haven't added any more runs to the 2 and 4 they have scored so far this season.

Tea was Great, Carol B again produced some exceedingly good cakes and pizza pieces are always a winner! Good work.

Copdock took to the field knowing that with Jon Kent in the side Sudbury would stand a chance, however if they could remove him cheaply, things would be in Copdock's hands.

Chunky Philips open the batting with Pete Seaget and the later fell for a duck again. Well snaffled by Thomas at slip. Quite what the blo*dy hell he was doing there, I don't know!

Chunky was acting as a ball magnet and was, like a steak at the little Chef, peppered badly. He was hit by Nose and twice by Deon. Eek was enjoying it so much he deliberately put down a regulation catch to keep Chunky out there longer!

Jon Kent started his innings brightly, stroking Deon through the covers for 4. Nose kept him quiet for an over and then bounced him out with a fast lifter that was through Kent in a flash and ended up with Eek juggling it at slip before smoothly popping it into his pocket. Out.

Copdock then went to sleep for a while, as they normally do and Sudbury began a revival. Chris, I've got a life-size picture of my self in the front room at home, Swallow bowled pretty tightly, without any luck. Quite frankly he deserves none! Eek toiled away too and with a left hander unorthodoxly chipping the ball all over the place and the Sudbury skipper clubbing the odd six they remained in the hunt!

Eek then removed them both in one over. Both caught, with finesse, by Nose on the long on boundary. Deon then came back into the attack and Sudbury were bundled out for 159. A good win by the Copdock Caterers and they are now top. The bowling and Batting was pretty solid, the fielding however continues to have slipped slightly in recent weeks and must improve. I haven't mentioned Burchy's stumping....genius, absolute genius. Apart from that he was solid as always. A big challenge next week away at 3rd placed Halstead, who have a strong top order. If Popey drops Spatch I'll not laugh like this week. Swallow will probably kill him! Just for the record. The Pro cont is now Deon 4, Chris 3, Nose 3 !!

The future's Bright, the Future's The Black Capped Copdock Caterers !!
