Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won By 84 Runs

Match report
I think the girls must be the most blessed junior team in terms of weather with yet another perfect evening for cricket, our third fixture of the season away to Hadleigh played in glorious evening sunshine.

With the only absentee Frankie, due to unavailability, Zinnia and Mai made their first appearances of the season in a very strong looking squad.

Skipper Beth lost the toss and we were put into bat with a challenging long boundary marked. Was this an opposition tactic? If so, it didn’t work!

Once again, there appeared to be a reluctance to open the batting, Felita and Katie again the volunteers and is customary for this pair the quick singles were taken from the off, however the Hadleigh fielders seemed unwilling to impose any pressure on the running, choosing to field very deep.

Katie was our first wicket to fall soon after the initial flurry of runs, losing her stump to a good delivery. This bought Mai to the crease looking to exhibit a display of powerful hitting and she didn’t disappoint, getting off the mark with a leg side boundary.

Felita then lost her wicket by run out at the non striker end, setting off for a single when Mai had defended a delivery straight back to the bowler !

Carrie then entered the fray and forged a magnificent partnership with Mai. Both girls made the most of a very open leg side field to pile on the runs. Unfortunately the score sheet didn’t record the score when these two came together but between them they scored four boundaries and numerous twos on their way to 23 each when both were retired to allow the other girls some batting time. I think the phrase I’d use is these two demolished the bowling attack!

And so a new pair of Beth and Emma came together with instructions to have a blast and score quick runs from the final overs, which they did, in turn retiring to allow Zinnia and Holly to face the last over. The final balls were negotiated without the loss of any wickets and so the girls had posted a fabulous total of 129 for 2 off 15 overs. Quietly confident would certainly describe the mood at the switch, with the opinion that we think we had done enough !

And so to defending the target. Zinnia, Holly and Emma were handed the ball to deliver the lion’s share of the bowling effort and what a great start they made. Displaying controlled accuracy, limiting wides and testing the Hadleigh openers. It wasn’t long before wickets began to tumble, and though 5 of the 7 wickets fell to run outs I would take a positive spin and state that the girl’s bowling forced Hadleigh to chase the runs.

Special mention must go to Holly, the only bowler to take a wicket, with figures of 3 overs, 1 maiden, 2 for 11. Holly was delighted and tells me these are the first wickets she’s ever taken, so well done Holly!

So the final wicket fell to Holly, clean bowled and Hadleigh had fallen well short of the required target though we should credit Valerie for getting the game on. She didn’t have a team the day before the match and did work hard to get the game on, with girls that have played very little cricket, so we must respect that.

However, a win is a win, three out of three and we move onto the next one!
