Match report At last, cricket weather arrived at the Copdock Oval and we managed to get a 20 Over a side match in, before the light started to fade.

The general standard of batting, bowling and fielding was good and occasionally excellent, which is very promising for the rest of the season given that this was the first match of the year and the first hard ball match ever for quite a few.

William proved to be an excellent choice of captain, arranging the bowlers well, moving the field around, encouraging his team mates and generally speeding up the game.

Archie also did very well behind the stumps, stopping nearly everything and almost took a good catch, only for the ball to pop out when he hit the floor.

Bowling in general was very good with most balls being fairly accurate in line. We probably need to work a bit more on pitching the ball closer towards the batter (to cut down on their available thinking time) and general consistency as we gave away an average of 3 runs in wides per over.

Batting was very positive, with no-one backing away from the hard ball. A general area of improvement would be to develop a bigger backlift to make sure that we are hitting or driving through the ball, rather than pushing it off the face (i.e. whack it a bit harder!). I would also like to see more use of the feet to move laterally across to the wider ball, rather than stretching over with the bat.

Always a fertile place for improvement is the calling and the running between wickets. As well as the basics of picking your knees up when running in pads and running either side of the wicket to avoid collision, we need to get into the habit of making quick and loud calls ('YES' / 'NO' / 'WAITING'), from the relevant batter and a quick response to that call from his partner (note the two run-outs). We also need to be aware of where the ball is in the field and looking for that extra run all the time. It was notable that all our runs came in singles and fours.

The standard of fielding was generally very good, with fielders naturally taking a backing-up position. However, there is always room for improvement in the field, with a couple of overthrows, a couple of boundaries given away when attempting to stop the ball with the foot and the odd missed run-out where we are still running with the ball to the stumps, rather than throwing it in.

All in all, a very enjoyable match, with the U11s running out as narrow winners in what turned out to be a fairly close match against a very good U9 team, with a high standard of play on both sides.

Many thanks to Paul, the lead U9 coach for arranging the match and keeping everyone in check and to Claire for scoring (and helping me with my inability to count to six on occasions).
