Mellis v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Copdock Eagles U11 on Tue 20 Jun 2023 at 6pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 47 runs

Match report Whilst England were losing the first Ashes test match, a team of 7 Copdock players enjoyed a fairly straightforward victory at the lovely Mellis ground, hidden away in the trees.

Batting first, whilst always positive, scoring was rather slow to start with, but speeded up as the innings progressed. Quickest scoring was from Thomas, whose partnership with Charlie was a great example of calling, backing-up and trusting your partner, enabling them to snaffle several extra byes out of thin air. Thomas's top score of 23 off 15 balls would have been even higher had a fat old man umpiring at square leg not got in the way of a certain boundary (sorry).

Our fielding was again both energetic and thoughtful (no overthrows), with captain Finley positioning his fielders well and every ball being chased down. Novice keepers Harry and Charlie both did very well behind the stumps, with only 5 byes given away and only two extra runs taken off wides.

Bowling was again very good with reasonable economy (still more opposition runs coming from wides, rather than off the bat), and a hatful of wickets shared between Josh (4 for 7), Finley (3 for 12) and Thomas (1 for 10).

All in all, another solid team performance from the Eagles squad.

We are now approaching the halfway point of the season, so it is good to think about two areas to improve on:

#1 - Reducing the number of Wides -
Making sure we pace out, mark (and then adjust if necessary) our run-up, running in straight and using the front arm to both line up and act as a lever for the bowling arm.

#2 - Even more positive batting -
Forget other formats that you may play at school, the key thing about the Super 8's format is that you never run out of batters, so from the team perspective, the risk/reward is the same for every single ball, whether the first of the innings or the last; whether within your first three balls or your fifteenth. It is always 5 runs to the opposition for a wicket lost (including your first three balls or your fifteenth), but 4 (or 6) runs for a boundary, so we can soon recover. Whilst I don't want to see wickets thrown away, the loss of a wicket in the pursuit of runs is not so bad as long as we keep that ultra positive mind set throughout the innings.
