Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won By 20 runs

Match report At the beginning of writing this match report I’ve promised to try and keep it short, some of the girls seemed to think my reports “go on a bit” !

So, it was somewhat fitting that on an evening when England were heralded for successfully chasing a target of 350 against New Zealand that our U11 girls performed a fantastic batting performance to emulate the national team’s run chase.

Having one the toss and elected to bowl, and fielding a side containing 3 younger age group girls, we set about restricting Hadleigh to a ‘getable’ score.

On the whole I didn’t think we bowled too badly however our fielding did let us down a bit, something the girls were a bit frustrated by at the break. Pick of the bowlers for the evening was Maddison conceding just 6 runs from her 2 overs with a wicket too.

At the halfway stage Hadleigh had posted a score of 293 which I did think was going to be difficult to chase. We had a team chat about how we should go about the task and tinkered with the batting order a little. What followed was a very enjoyable display of powerful batting.

Megan and Sophie were first up, and as opening pair had to deal with the pace of Hadleigh’s excellent bowler who was in fairness bowling from well behind the crease. The girls had understood that bat on ball using the pace of the delivery was good enough for singles, every ball of the over was scored from and although we had a run out we managed to take advantage of some Hadleigh misfielding from the last ball to take a 3. Megan and Sophie saw out the 2nd over for a further 8 runs and then pacey Harriet came back for her second over and here started the fireworks !

Now I think it’s fair to say that Harriet is probably the best U11 bowler in the league and also plays for the Hadleigh U13 girls where she opens the bowling, so she’s quite good. Well Sophie had something in mind, they say the best form of defence is attack and why not? First ball of the over 4 runs, second ball of the over 4 runs, fantastic. No ball for the third. Fourth ball, leg side delivery, dispatched over square leg boundary for 6 !! One bounce and in to the field !! Now I know I’m going on a bit again but sixes in U11 girl’s cricket are not an everyday occurrence so I was delighted.

Unfortunately we had a delay of several minutes trying to find the ball which I think disturbed Sophie’s concentration a bit as when the next ball was finally delivered she lost her wicket, but hey, no bother with that !!

So at the end of the first partnership we had scored 34 runs, Megan with 14 and Sophie with 16.

Next in was Amelia and Sophia, Sophia playing her first competitive game of cricket. It was always going to be difficult to follow the scoring rate of the first pair, however it was encouraging to see Amelia gaining the confidence to get bat on ball, at one stage almost making the boundary with an off side drive. Sophia will be better for the experience too and the pair were unfortunate to lose a few wickets during their overs.

So Charlotte and Felicity came in, and as a result of the Hadleigh bowling, at times didn’t really get the opportunity to open up and score some runs off the bat, the score increasing however with wides and no balls. When the ball was there to be hit though, it generally was and there was some good running between the wickets putting pressure on the Hadleigh fielders. This third partnership lost no wickets and added a solid 29 to the score, which meant that the final pair of Amalie and Maddison needed 37 runs off 4 overs.

On coming to the crease I said to the girls we needed 10 runs per over, so key was to not lose any wickets, hope for some extras and if the ball is there to be hit, go for it.

That’s what they did, and in what style! Amelie and Maddie made a partnership of 57! Amazing, and to consider that from these last 4 overs there were just 4 extras so this was all down to the girls.

Having said earlier that sixes in U11 girl’s cricket are rare, and we’d had one from Sophie earlier, Amelie creamed two! This was in addition to five fours on her way to an incredible 42 runs off 16 deliveries faced. Fabulous batting and ably assisted by Maddie.

And so the game was won, a magnificent performance which I hope you enjoyed watching as much as I did !

I didn’t keep the report short did I, sorry girls!
