Match report A glorious day at the Copdock Oval and at last something like the side we would like to put out every Sunday.
Unsure whether it was the usual Copdock road or still "under the weather" the skipper had decided to put the opposition in as our batting has been somewhat flaky of late, so was delighted when Lexden won the toss and batted.
Opening up with Harry (a little too quick for us)Harvey and Ashwin (I am a bit rusty hence all the "chin music") Bhatt, the Lexden top order looked uncomfortable.
In his second over Ashwin managed to at last get one full and straight and was rewarded by taking middle stump. His next ball was another half tracker, but much too fast for Manhire who could only glove it to Matt Searle behind the stumps. First game back and on a hat trick! Unfortunately the next ball was wide of leg stump.
Dave Searle joined Ashwin and kept it tight and when Flo replaced Ashwin the new spin twins kept the pressure on and the score rate down.
As wickets had dried up Dave was replaced with Henry to see what a brace of Wilkinson's could do for us and the skipper was immediately rewarded with Henry taking a wicket with his first ball (caught behind), another in his third over (a fine stumping from Matt) and then Flo joined the party, Ashwin taking a fine running catch out at cow corner. Ashwin continued to shine in the field, a direct hit from point confirming "there is no single to Ashwin" and another Lexden batsman out for a duck. Harry came back into the attack, Matt taking his third catch of the match to add to the stumping and things were looking good. Steve then replaced Henry and wrapped it up with 3 wickets for no runs in 4 overs. Lexden all out for 88.
It was never in doubt, the pitch turned out to be a road after all and though Steve was unlucky to get the one ball that really did anything being caught at first slip to one that darted away from him, Dave (68) and Archie (18) brought it home (Archie out hitting Dave on the 6 count)for a comfortable 9 wicket win only needing 10.3 overs to do the job.
Hopefully our season starts now.....
