Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 1st XI v Great Witchingham on Sat 26 Apr 2014 at 11am
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report First XI Vs Great Witchingham

The first team were at home this week against Great Witchingham at Old London road.

Disappointingly neither of the Essex lads were available as Essex had a game in Bristol against Gloucestershire. Harry Cook and Hugo Douglas were also unavailable due to Uni and School games. Tom Jenkin moved to the Second team to get in some batting and bowling ahead of a long season.

James East won the Toss and after some incredible work from Martin Taylor and his team the game was to start after an early lunch at 1pm. Copdock would bowl first. Tom Rash and James East opening the bowling and looked threatening from the off. Tom Rash struck first and removed last season's leading EAPL run scorer Sam Artherton early for a duck. Tom continued to strike at regular intervals and James nipped in with 3 wickets. Really The " Witches " should have been bowled out for around the 100 mark, but with two poor dropped catches they snuck up to 132. Tom Rash ended up with Six wickets and James East 3. Special mention should also go to Hugh Thomas who enable the captain to give Tom by bowling a tight 6 over spell mid innings. Chris Swallow picked up the other wicket in what was a fine team performance. Albeit with the odd mistake.

What should have been a fairly comfortable chase became difficult as Copdock continued to lose wickets. Again the top 5 all made double figures and got out when set. Also last week's main contributors of Jed and James managed 1 between them and things became tense. Hugh Thomas, batting at nine of all places showed what a master stroke this was by combining with Tom Rash to put on the 60 needed for victory. A good win against a decent side.

What we can take from this game is that Copdock look a decent side themselves, especially when you add one of the Essex staff and increased availability, there is strong competition for places, definitely when you add into the mix a couple of the fringe players performing for the second team.

Tom Rash had an excellent game and getting a decent bowl each week is really coming to the for. His 6 wickets this week take him to the head of the EAPL. Hugh Thomas had a great game and although disappointed with batting down the order put this aside and played a match winning innings.

As Captain I couldn't be happier with the fight the side showed again. If the batting fires slightly more, I'll be delighted.

The future's bright, the future's Copdock.
