Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 5 runs

Match report Firstly, a big thank you to everyone for turning up on time. This will be important when we start playing matches against other clubs, who have traipsed half-way across the county to play us and all the logistical problems that poses (I’m not that old that I don’t remember my child-taxi days).

Another close match, finished in daylight (just), with the full spectrum of cricketing skills on display.

Batting first, the Lions (captained by Alex Elder) made 162 off their 18 overs for the loss of 7 wickets. The batting was lead by Will Southgate, narrowly missing out on his second Super 8’s 50 with 48 off 17 balls undefeated, this was backed up by impressive batting from Alex Elder, Arthur East and Charlie Kerr who also scored at more than one a ball (18 off 15). Bowling honours for the Hawks go to Viishruth Senthil and Finlay Blemings, with a pair of wickets each, backed up by miserly bowling from Teddy Cresswell (6 for 1 off 2 overs) and Shlok Kumar (11 for 0 off 2 overs).

In reply, the Hawks (captained by Jack Defty), initially appeared to be cruising to victory, being in the lead by 11 runs with just 3 overs to go. However, a succession of wickets and tight bowling in each of the remaining overs left them requiring 3 runs off the final 3 balls. However, the cool heads of Finley and Jack prevailed, with Jack hitting the final ball for 4 to seal a 5 run victory. Best batters for the Hawks were Jack Defty (31 runs off 18 balls) and Shlok Kumar (27 off 13), both undefeated. This was backed up by better than a run a ball innings from Henry King, Viishruth Senthil and Finlay Blemings. Best bowling for the Lions was by Alex Elder (3 for 21 off 3), Will Southgate (2 for 22 off 3) and Percy Clark-Wright (2 for 20 off 2), backed up with miserly bowling and a wicket apiece for Arthur East (1 for 8 off 2) and Charlie Kerr (1 for 10 off 2).

Special mention should be made of Ralph Eggar’s impressive fielding and Harrison’s stoicism in carrying on behind the stumps after wearing a sharp one on the shoulder from a particularly fast Southgate delivery.

Thanks also for the dependable scoring of Adam Blemings (especially important in a close match) and to James Kerr for umpiring.
