Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 79 runs

Match report A fairly straightforward first round win for the U11 Cup team, unfortunately reduced to 7 players due to illness. However, to be fair to the Melton team, which included two players playing their first hard ball match, they played with great determination and effort and never let their heads drop, well lead from the front by Charlie King taking 4 wickets for 10 and scoring 26 off 12 balls.

After losing the toss and being put in to bat first, Copdock kept the scoreboard ticking over, amassing a huge total of 175 runs of their 18 overs, with Orlando Church again leading the way with an unbeaten 50 off 22 balls (narrowly missing out on his own record of 50 off 21 set just a couple of weeks ago). We did however lose a total of 7 wickets (although this was mainly off very good balls) and for a couple of brief periods the scoring slowed to a snail’s pace.

In Melton’s innings, we bowled very well with every bowler taking at least one wicket, with two apiece for Arthur East (2 for 11 off 3 overs) and Charlie Kerr (2 for 15 off 3 overs). There was a great juggling catch by Alex Elder and generally we fielded well, with captain Sam setting the fields. However, a definite area of improvement is getting in the habit of returning to your fielding position after each ball rather than creeping in over time, which over the match cost us a few boundaries.

Copdock eventually ran out as comfortable winners by 79 runs, but we will be facing a much sterner test in the quarter final against Easton, which we will be playing at home on either 30/05 or 06/06.
