Match report Another Friday evening, another close match against Easton.

Winning the toss and bowling first, we bowled and fielded well, but despite the loss of three early wickets, within the first three overs, Easton batted deep and ran well, ending with a score of 127-5. Best bowling figures went to Albie with 2-6 off 2 overs, with a wicket apiece for Arthur and Finley. Overall we bowled too many extras: 24 off wides, 12 off no-balls, but notably only a single bye, with Stanley doing sterling work behind the stumps (like the goalkeeper no-one notices).

We therefore had a target of over 7 an over, which we were ahead of until about the tenth over, when we started to run out of steam and ended up requiring 17 off the last over to win. Despite the rearguard efforts of Alex and Theo, scoring three boundaries in the final over, we fell just short. Albie was top scorer, retiring on 41 not out, hitting 9 fours. This was supported by steady scoring from Arthur and Stan, keeping the total ticking over through the middle overs, before the last over run fest.

Resisting the clamour for a super over, overall a tie seemed a fair result and it would be difficult to point to any particular event where we missed out (that ball that just evaded the fielder, that extra run not taken, that step over the crease line), although I would say the culprit was probably the number of runs down to wides (24 off our bowling, compared to Easton's 15). However, if we keep playing with the same strategy and energy, I'm sure we can improve in future matches and I am looking forward to the reverse fixture in July.
