Match report
Despite a sharp shower just before the match, the weather and light held up for our first U11 league match of the year.
Given that not all our players had turned up by the time we wanted to start the match (and we ended up playing with seven players as someone didn't turn up at all), Easton agreed to us batting first.
Theo, our reluctant captain (and even more reluctant wicketkeeper!), opened the batting and after striking the first ball for a four, immediately followed this by making use of the three-ball grace you get in the Super 8's format (still 5 runs to the opposition), by playing across the line of the ball. After that, the batting remained fairly positive (seven boundaries in all), with Theo, Charlie G and Charles W all scoring at nearly a run a ball (which is the target I always set in these matches). Overall, the batting score seemed a bit light (56 off the bat and 43 in extras), and whilst the boys called well for the first run and stole a bye every time the keeper fumbled the ball, there were only two twos ran in the innings (compared to eight in Easton's innings). I certainly don't think Easton's fielding was superior and given that we ended up loosing by a paltry three runs, we need to get in the habit of running the first run hard and always looking for more, rather than settling for the safe single.
In the field, our players were alert and (with one notable exception where we gave away four overthrows) moving into the right positions to back-up, then moving back to the original position (rather than gradually creeping in). Marcus and Charles W were particularly dynamic and effective in the field. Theo improved with the gloves throughout the innings, gaining confidence to stand closer to the stumps.
The bowling was generally good, with our best balls better than the opposition (seven wickets, with all bowlers taking at least one wicket), but overall less consistent: giving away 37 in wides and 5 in no balls, which is what ultimately cost us the match. There was a particularly good bowling performance from Tarquin, who came back from a mediocre first over, to then take three wickets all together, having the confidence to give the ball enough air to draw the batters into making a mistake. There was also solid bowling from Alex, Marcus and Charles W, who would all have had another wicket if they were bowling from a little bit closer to the stumps, so the umpire can give those close LBW decisions (the benefit of doubt goes to the batter I'm afraid).
The match became quite close with three wickets taken in the last two overs. Unfortunately with the complexity of the Super 8's scoring (needing to add 5 runs to the fielding side's team for each wicket taken, rather than just taking it off the batting score), the players were not particularly clear what the score was near the end and it only became clear that we had lost by three runs, after the scores were added up by the Easton coach after the final ball, who was doing his best to keep score whilst also umpiring at square leg. It would be appreciated if some parents could volunteer to score in future matches, so hopefully we can keep live track of the score. I'm happy to give a run through the scoring after training on a Sunday.
Overall, it was good to get the first match out of the way, with the boys showing many good things in their play, with there also being some clear areas for development. Onwards and upwards!
