Match report A greatly improved performance from the Hawks when compared to the home fixture against Stowmarket, a few weeks ago, where we were soundly beaten by 56 runs.

Whilst still bowling too many wides and no-balls (it will always be hard to win matches when you are giving away 48 extras), excluding these, everyone’s bowling was consistently on the stumps and of a good length, whilst fielding was also sharp, energetic and thoughtful (only the one overthrow over the boundary this week). The score after Stowmarket’s innings was 118 for 6, meaning that Copdock started their innings with 30 on the board, presenting a realistic target of 5 runs an Over (plus another 5 for each wicket lost) for victory.

Batting was very positive, with players striking the ball hard, looking for gaps, calling loudly and taking extra runs or byes when available. With 5 overs left, and with only 2 wickets lost, the victory target of 19 runs off 30 balls was within sniffing distance. A sobering wicket maiden (bowled by Stowmarket’s best player, Ben Hopper, who only gave away 4 runs off 3 overs and also top scored on 24 runs) followed, with a further run a ball over leaving a more challenging target of 16 runs off 12 balls. This was the point where positive running tipped over into the suicidal and whilst a clearly flustered Stowmarket gifted us some overthrows, four wickets in the last two overs (including three run-outs) resulted in Stowmarket eventually running out as victors by 21 runs

Best individual batting performances came from James (21 runs), with Frank and Leon also scoring 11 off the bat each, whilst ensuring every opportunity to run byes was taken. With the ball, everyone bowled with reasonable economy despite the one or two bad balls an over, with Frank and Brendan (who started his second over on a hat-trick) taking two wickets each.

Stowmarket were great hosts, lending us a fielder (as unfortunately we were a player down), scoring the match on play.cricket and putting the score up live on the electronic scoreboard, which definitely added to the excitement (or madness, depending on your perspective) at the end.

With the home fixture against Mellis yet to be re-arranged, this may well have been the Hawks’ final league match this season. Hopefully the boys have all enjoyed the matches; I certainly have. They have all improved significantly over the season: not just in terms of technical skill level, but more importantly in terms of confidence, putting those skills into practice.
