Mellis v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Copdock Hawks U11 on Tue 14 Jun 2022 at 6pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 34 runs

Match report First Hawks win of the season.

This was my first time at Mellis CC's lovely ground tucked away in a secluded corner of the Thornham estate. Mellis were excellent hosts, providing a scorer and refreshments afterwards (although the coach seemed upset that he couldn't get the electronic scoreboard working) and the match was played in a great spirit.

Such is the flexibility of the Super 8's format (when allowed), the eight boys from Copdock played a mixed team of 10 (i.e. nearly all Mellis's U11 players) on a flat, but low bouncing wicket with a super-flat outfield and a short boundary. Batting first, the Hawks made a total of 100, with most of the runs (just about) coming off the bat rather than extras, and the loss of only four wickets (including an LBW decision prompted by the quietest and politest appeal ever). In the field, the Hawks bowled and fielded very well for about 80% of the time, taking 8 wickets for 86 runs, but the winning margin of 34 was somewhat reduced from what it could have been by a high number of wides and some fairly comical overthrows (only one of the Mellis boundaries actually coming off the bat): que the Benny Hill music.

Performance-wise, with the bat, Frank, James and Wilfred all had a strike rate of over 90 (i.e. almost a run a ball), with 8 boundaries between them. In the field, the Hawks all bowled fairly economically at less than a run a ball (even including all the wides), with Leon having particularly miserly figures of 2 wickets for 5 runs off 2 overs. There was also a brace of wickets for Frank, Wilfred and Sam. Fielding was tight most of the time, but the attempted run-outs were costly. James kept well behind the stumps, with an appropriate level of chat and a few stumping attempts to keep the batters honest, and also captained the team effectively.

Overall, an enjoyable evening, sandwiched between England's great performance in the Test Match at Trent Bridge and England's woeful performance at Molyneux (in that football tournament that no-one really understands or cares about).
