Battisford U11 v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Copdock Hawks U11 on Tue 17 May 2022 at 6pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 37 runs

Match report On a beautiful early summer evening at Battisford, we achieved a notable first for an U11 Copdock team: everyone managed to find the ground, with only a minor shuffle in the batting order required to accommodate a late-comer. Results-wise, it was pretty much downhill from there, with the relatively inexperienced Hawks (fielding several players in their first competitive hard-ball match for the club) being overcome by a Battisford side that was very much improved over recent years.

However, overall this was a very promising performance from the Hawks, with good communication and teamwork in the field and between the stumps. The difference between the teams was down to consistency in bowling line (too many wides), bowling length (too many no-balls), reticence in attempting quick runs and failing to slide the bat in when they were.

There were notable individual performances from Chris Sloper with both bat (16 runs off 18 balls) and ball (3 overs, 3 wickets for 7 runs), backed up with some sharp, ‘Malinga-like’ bowling from Wilf Wakeley (2 overs, 1 maiden, 3 wickets for 1 run) and mean bowling from Ollie McCartney (2 overs, 1 wicket for 6 runs), and Sam Shukla (2 overs for 3 runs). There was a very competent (and vocal) performance behind the stumps from James Hall and energetic performances in the field, notably from Chris Sloper with some excellent stops and Wilf with a well taken catch.

Many thanks also to Graham (Riley’s dad) for allowing himself to be ‘volunteered’ into scoring for the first time, which given the problems with using the play-cricket app, has thankfully enabled me to construct a half-accurate set of batting/bowling figures for the Copdock boys, in combination with both the play-cricket app record and my recollection of when wickets fell. In fairness to them, I haven’t attempted to put down any individual Battisford scores, and the result on the Suffolk play-cricket website https://sjccc.play-cricket.com is somewhat different, but rest assured: we lost.

That said, and much more importantly, whilst this team clearly has a long way to go, everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves, whilst hopefully learning a little something along the way.

Many thanks to all at Battisford for being great hosts and gracious winners. We can now look forward to the return fixture on Friday 01.07.22, when hopefully we’ll be a bit better prepared by then.
