Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Sunday XI v Clacton-On-Sea on Sun 05 Jul 2009 at 2.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Just a Normal Game of Cricket in the Sunshine.
There were confused faces at the fancy dress party on the saturday night when Steve Catchpole, failed to show up. He mumbled excuses early in the day, but all came clear when we saw the deck. Now, my lawyer has informed me that I cannot under any circumstances insinuate that Catchpole doctored the track with water. But he could at least have turned the tap off.
Normality Resumed as Thomas, (badgered into playing, was forced from his sickbed) went and won the toss. Looking back at the game it was probably quite a big toss to win! As Normal the innings got off to a flier, Reuben Sharpe going at 15's but picking up a wicket in the Inverse Second Davey(short cover). Brilliant we thought, but it brought to the crease Comber, who, toby took one look at and thought "he's next." Comber decided to smash 41 in no time at all, as after 5 overs, Clacton were on 60, and Catchpole had only gone for four of them!! The run rate then fell further as Catchpole's quicker ball accounted for Comber, and then held one back as Clactons Pro pushed a gentle caught and bowled back to him. Their were comparisons of Ireland beating the West Indies floating about from the 60's on a "sticky dog" of a pitch. This got the captain's juices going as he went on the attack, He opened a reverse umbrella field, having two in the Davey(short midwicket), a Guy Robins, an inverse Guy Robins (silly Mid-off) and two in the inverse Davey(short cover). No one knew what was going on!! Kirk Junior decided the best way to play was to drive on the up, and so picked out Thomas Snr, who took what can only be described as a screamer, diving full length and plucking the ball one handed, well he is my dad!! Lewis Catlow, after a couple of overs settled into his rhythm and accounted for his mate, missing a full straight one, I told you so! None of these young batsmen were listening to the wise coaching of Thomas behind the stumps, they could learn a lot from that. The tail came and went as quick as a Catchpole Maiden, with Gauke and Banham taking 5 between them, without arguing once, I'm very proud of you boys. Turner was left stranded on 94 as only two clacton players made double figures. Now the pitch had dried out and was not so bad to face the seamers but it was a raging bunsen burner.
A lovely tea ensued from Mrs Thomas (keep it in the family). We thought it would be lovely to have a walk round the ground early on, but we hadn't even made it to the scorebox, before Sharpe was out caught behind, I've lost count of the amount of times he's done that. The 3's have got Coggeshall at home next week, rumour had it they have a 12 year old opening the bowling, you can do it Reuben! This brought together a Murderer and a Run Machine, not a combination you like to see as a bowler, or even a fielder for that matter. The pair must have put on at least 150 for the second wicket, the highlight of which was Comber getting stuck into Toby, he obviously didn't recognise that mug shot from crimewatch!! Simon Holmes Runs per Mile travelled for the weekend wouldn't have made the happiest of reading. New player Andy Westaway tried to hit his first ball into Capel St Marie, picking up one, then got hold of the next ball he faced hitting a very flat six, game over!
What an utterly strange game it was, one of the positives we can take out of this is that Reuben is now an excellent collector of Match-fees.
