Match report
Copdock managed to field 11 after some aggressive second team selections. The hottest day of the year started brightly as captain Thomas won the toss, on the flattest pitch ever, ignoring pleas from the C&EE captain that the pitch would get even flatter... Copdock had the best possible start losing sharp second ball of the match, with the score on 7, sharp nicked up to a bowler who'd almost yipped up in fear of bowling to sharpe. He battled through though, for all our sakes and bowled a ball outside off Sharpe prodded at and nicked. Captain Thomas came and went flattering to deceive, hitting a couple of boundaries then missing a straight half volley. He'll have to do some excellent brown nosing to get in next week. The top order wasnt at it's strongest this week after some notable batsmen let the team down, with poor excuses, like computer difficulties (not everyone needs a dell!), and revision. (i thought exams were meant to be getting easier, pissweak all you hairs!) Brad Hodge realised it wasnt kwik cricket halfway down the track when it was too late. His argument that he hit the ball he had to run, didn't hold any ground with harvey whos call was "NO RUN, Im not getting runout on this deck". Unlucky youth. Harvey junior got out to a kid who should have been revising, thats not fair.
Then fell a flurry of wickets but the one highlight was a stylish five from big dave. Struggling at 8-132, Druitt and Gauke came together, and after coming down the track early on, Gauke looked tired, when he completed his first run, it looked even worse. Banham commented he was "panting Profusely" whilst sharp was seen comatozed propped up against advertising boards with a bulb and soil on his head, good throwing chaps. Drez smashed it everywhere with Martin Cull's bat, how or why he managed to pinch it no one knows, but he did, and selflessly gave his wicket away in the hunt for runs for a good 20 odd. Gauke continued this, realising he had to start hitting boundaries or he might not manage the long walk back to the pavillion. Amazingly Gauke did with 34 Red to his name off 32, with some Glorious shots over cover. But Gauke failed to realise Hull City is the only football league team without any letters you can colour in.
I think the tea deserves its own paragraph, well, some said it was better than Abberton, others no one can beat Copford, but what a treat it was to see enough pizza for everyone, HOT potato Wedges and finally Trifle with Ice Cream. Its fair to say its a fine tactic to ensure opposition are immobile in the field, but its not fair to say that with the Tea inside us it's the sole reason we lost this game... Again Sharpe ruined the atmosphere by compairing the captains shoes to canoes, this one bamboozled us all.
Copdock couldnt contain C&EE's opening pair of Ahmed and Barnett, Ahmed in particuarly played shots all over the wicket. Copdock never really looked like taking a wicket untill a change in the field to create a bit more pressure, resulted in the ball being skied to Big Dave at Cover, in not know where the hell the ball was, his mind was probably thinking trifle and ice cream, I know i was! it very nearly landed on his head! had he caught it we may have had a sniff,(!!!) we were bound to get barnett out as soon as the ball hit his pads, after asking the Umpires how many balls were left more times than he scored runs! Gauke bowled his skiddy non turning stock ball and rapped him on the pads, it wouldn't have hit 3 sets of stumps, that'll learn him, count to six! Ahmed got to his hundred and in the process nearly hit Gauke into the river. A thorough beating received for Copdock, but at least it was a nice day, wasn't it Reuben?
