Match report On A Day When Cricket Was The Winner

With hopes of promotion all but lost, the II’s made the short hop to Clay Hall, to ensure local bragging rites remained intact for another season. Some swift jiggery-pokery was stage managed at The Oval prior to departure, with the news that Archie had pulled up lame for the ones, so he was to be exchanged for Reuben. A slight delay ensued, which gave Stadler & Waldorf the opportunity to go on in advance to set up roadchecks. The Onion arrived amid tight security, and was ushered into the previously unused changing facility. A leisurely stroll to the middle revealed a flat deck with a good covering of grass. It looked like a belter. After seeking the advice of The Lawnmowerman & Waldorf, who both declared a joking interest to field, Cuff hardly had time to clear his much prized CO-Op Carrier Bag before an afternoon’s toil in the field was declared.

Steve Catchpole returned for his first game since 1997, which also quashed the rumours that he’d been Allerton’d, and was straight onto that Terry Aldermanesque line and length. He went past the edge of Lloyd’s bat with regularity, but the odd one that caught the edge failed to go to hand, which then revealed the lightning fast outfield. Lloyd (54) and Allday (64) batted extremely well, and appeared to be setting their sights on a mountainous total, racing to 100 from 20 overs. But, as so often besets the impetuosity of youth, they perished soon after their respective half centuries, with Waldorf (3-47 from 14), exerting his usual pressure picking up both scalps. The Cat, although bowling with splendour of loop, toiled in vain, and was replaced with The Lawnmowerman. With Bobby Manning now at the crease, runs still threatened to flow. Stadler, posted in the early warning radar station had good view of the arrivals hall, but with Bobby no longer “manning” the car park, an audible early warning signal was introduced . Clearly taking his security duties far too seriously, Cuff produced a couple of delightfully oafish examples of his fielding prowess. First he returned from the boundary after yet another hapless chase down of a cover push drive, sans ballon! He then had the temerity to blame Stevie Catch, who had run from deep cover point. This was followed by being presented with the chore of stopping the dab shot at backward point. After he ran around one like a spaniel with a firework in his mouth, he then ballooned a throw four yards over Shot Scotty’s outstretched gloves to add another two. Heckling from the boundary of, “Are you Reuben in disguise” seemed harsh. But with tight control from The Groundsman (4-27), and the reintroduction of Stevie Catch (2-46), the total of 206 was woefully short of being safely defendable. It was no 546 to win, and this was a wonderful batting track.

A wonderful tea and great news from The “real” Oval made for a buoyant interval. Hugo & Waldorf strode to the middle and made good the start of the chase. It took a sharp catch to remove an unlucky Gravell, but that brought debutante Jamie Green to the wicket. His profile reads, “I like to play cricket”. Short, but to the point. After measuring himself against the well directed bowling of Dunleavy, he compiled his 27 runs in steady fashion, growing in confidence throughout. As KB went about his business at the other end, Green produced the shot of the day, with a well-timed straight drive for four from leg spinner Smith. He also fell to a smartly taken chance, which brought The Lawnmowerman to the party. Showing measured restraint, both batsmen followed the “hit the bad ball” principle and stayed with the 5-an-over rate. After KB perished, out strode Stadler. The Onion, clearly disturbed that the ring of amassed bodyguards were now either in play or the shower, had placed Stadler on emergency standby. After facing several balls with his phone in his back pocket, he felt it safe to leave it with the square leg umpire knowing he’d still reach ground zero in time if needed!

The boy IS an idiot!

Although failing miserably, his pathetic “not Since The Days of Percival” schoolboy attempt to steal a last ball single and run out his free scoring partner did seem diabolical in its intent. In fact it was he who fell on his sword, after a cameo 33. With only 20 runs required, and with Terry Bailey’s “Finish it With a Six” encouragement, Shorts succumbed to some ugly strokemaking, but survived to an undefeated 72, as the game was won at a canter with 2 overs to spare.

No-one was truly sure if Archie was there, or with Cuff’s antics, if Sharpe was still present! Wootton kept very tidily, and Burty bowled well with no luck. So as The Onion was ushered back to his vehicle under a blanket, behind a heavily armed presence of minders, the sun was setting on a wonderful day’s cricket, played in a great spirit, between friends in a very tranquil setting.
Cricket truly had been the winner.
