Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Little Bardfield on Sat 04 Aug 2018 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 47 runs
Match report
Copdock dismantle Little Cheatfield at the home of Suffolk Cricket
As I sit reflecting on yesterday’s events at the Copdock Oval, I can conclude that it was a truly remarkable day of cricket. 595 runs plundered at a merciless economy of 6.61 per over. Who’d be a bowler, eh?
The young’uns fought courageously in a warm up, but were unable to stave off predictable defeat, despite the best efforts of Underwood who crumbled under the pressure of stand-in young’un ‘Keeper Sharpe.
Returning Captain East (JR) won the toss and decided to bat on a surface which was used and on the road side of the square. Road it turned out to be. Sntorey and Sharpe got the Scoobs off to a watchful start, before Reuben remembered it was Reuben Sharpe Day. Effortlessly easing out of the Daddy teens and into “start” territory Reuben was severe on anything over pitched. 32-0 off nine overs soon became 78-0 off 13 as the Patron Saint of Excuses eased his way to 47, before clipping a half volley to mid on trying to take the attack to Cheatfield.
The positivity rubbed off on Sntorey who needed a 5 (BUZZZZZZZZZZERS) to get going, but when he did savaged width and ran like a copper after a paedo (Graham was lapping constantly…).
Mexome came and went in a bluster of positivity before tamely lofting a leading edge to mid wicket. First team captain Swallow (inlaws wedding anniversary Sat night) and Karl Sntorey came together and played proper, modern one – day cricket, hitting gaps, running hard and taking a boundary most overs. It was terrific to watch and tonic to the Captain East who has been forced to watch some torrid stuff in the first half of the season.
Swallow biffed, bashed and bludgeoned it to all parts of the ground compiling a 19-over hundred in serene fashion and one that is surely welcome to the club’s talisman who now has over 200 first team appearances to his name.
Sntorey was eventually dismissed for a sparkling 87, which leaves him as the top senior run scorer for the club with 612 to his name, thus far. Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Division 2 all star team stuff, if ever I’ve seen it.
Swallow perished for an imperious 112 and Ward and MS Dhonald guided the score to 321-4, an imposing total.
A delightful tea of Salmon, salad and Chablis filled up both sides (some for the first time) and the impact on proceedings was a sedate start.
After 6 overs, the score was 14-0. Not quite what is required when chasing 7.13 an over, that said, if you are willing to sacrifice your team mates to have a net with 8 games left (no chance of promotion or relegation) and you have a ponytail, you will be quite unpopular. Then, when you glove one behind and stand there and following it up by then moaning when you are eventually given out, what do you expect. Mr Hitchcock, you are an imbecile and Mother Cricket got you eventually.
The chase was limp until the 30th over mark and as American novelist James Baldwin remarked; “beware the man with nothing to lose”. Copdock had the field up for the high quality spin pairing of East and Swallow. At this stage, Linney and Slemmings went beserk, scoring 97* and 67 respectively. Ward almost turned the game with what would have been a screamer from a full blooded sweep off the bowling of East, to follow an excellent first catch under the lid.
Had the opener Hitchcock not treated himself to a net at the expense of the game, there could have been a terrific and competitive day of cricket, however, due to his selfishness, he cost his side the game and any chance of a result. Slemmings and Linney did commendably well from the position they were in.
They were also both incredibly (and surprisingly) nice chaps – according to superstar scorer Alys who once again devoted her Saturday to Copdock / me. What a girl she is! She even assisted with the match report…
Copdock won by 47 runs in the end, a just result to the better team. If we can continue to get sides like this out for the rest of the season we have a genuine chance of survival. MAKE YOURSELVES AVAILABLE!!!!
The future is bright…
