Match report Copdock Cavaliers v. Hadleigh CC U15s – Thursday 15 May 2016 Cavaliers (167 – 1) beat Hadleigh (148 – 3) by 19 runs. The Cardinals had a frustrating evening earlier in the week when their game away at Bury St Edmunds was abandoned due to rain after nine overs, and so on a glorious evening at the Copdock Oval this was the U15 squad’s first opportunity to complete a fixture. Many thanks to Andy Leggett who umpired and Carl Hatcher who scored. The Cavaliers won the toss and elected to bat. The opening pair of George Offord and Dan Leggett made a spritely start, scoring 17 off the first three overs. In the 4 th over, Offord gave a chance but was dropped at mid-off, and the score had moved on to 38 for no wicket by the end of the 5 th over. At the halfway point of the Cavaliers’ innings, the score was 78 for no wicket, with Leggett and Offord both on 34. Offord reached his 50 and retired. He was replaced by Luke Froggatt and at the end of the 13 th over the score had moved on to 109. The Cavaliers were 125 – 0 after 15. In the 16 th over, Leggett reached his 50 and was replaced by James Doig. It had been a fine opening stand by Offord and Leggett which ought to prove the foundation for a Cavaliers’ victory in their first game. In the last over, Doig was stumped for 11 on the penultimate ball, and was replaced for the last by Harry Reddington. At the end of the Cavaliers’ 20 overs, they had amassed an impressive total of 167 for 1, with Froggatt unbeaten on 45 and Reddington 1 not out. Hadleigh opened their innings with 10 off Skipper Ollie Stace’s first over. Will Seitam, playing his first game for Copdock, responded with an aggressive maiden, and then a wicket in his second. It might have been two but for a front foot no ball being called as the bails flew to fine leg. Wicketkeeper Doig unfortunately had to leave the pitch having caught a nasty blow to his finger, and Offord took over with the gloves. At the end of their 5 th over, Hadleigh were 22 for 1. Seth Green and Dillon Hatcher joined the attack. At the end of the 10 th , Hadleigh were 64 for 1. Byron Evans bowled the 11 th over and Finlay Morrison the 12 th . It seemed like the required rate would be beyond the visitors, but as the sun dipped below the horizon, the temperature plummeted and fielders began to feel the chill.
Page 2 of 2In the 13 th over, Hadleigh’s Jamie Colcomb retired after reaching a stylish and untroubled 50. Reddington bowled the 15 th over, by the end of which Hadleigh had reached 116 for 1. Hatcher returned for the 16 th , with Hadleigh needing 52 to win off the last five. In the gathering gloom, the chatter on the boundary turned to pink balls and flashing bails. At the end of the over the score was 125. Stace bowled the 17 th . 130 for 1 off 17 overs. Hatcher bowled the 18 th , and with two overs left Hadleigh needed 30 to win. Will Stace bowled the 19 th , taking the wickets of Fin Anderson with his 3 rd ball and Harry Lloyd with his 5 th , both bowled. Green returned to bowl the 20 th , with Hadleigh needing an improbable 26 to win. James Wilding reached his 50 in the last over and retired, and Hadleigh finished on 148 for 3. The Cavaliers’ total had proved beyond Hadleigh, but it had been a very enjoyable game played in good spirit.
