Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Little Bardfield on Sat 03 Sep 2016 at 12.30pm
Match was Abandoned
Match report
With promotion in the balance and some suspect weather expected, the Scoobies 'welcomed' Little Bardfield - who were the last to derail the Winbus in an unpleasant affair in the revserve fixture, deep in middle earth.
With promotion a possibility Ironfist was either too ill or too nervous to play himself with Ferg called up to the firsts as well. In came the returning Harry Bailey and a debut call up for Matt Searle following a string of impressive performances for U19's/3 XI and Sunday sides. The usual football warm up was won by the Young 'uns as 'keeper Sharpe carried the ball into his own net in similar stye to that OG @ Mistley a few years ago. Sharpe was unable to point to an aggressive raincard that a few others had played the previous evening too. It was with some relief that East JR (more athletic, attractive, weighty) won the toss and elected to bat under the watchful eye of the one (requested) umpire who had deigned to turn up on time.
Sharpe and Gravell started off the Flopdock effort and were soon into their stride. Gravell in particular looking serene with a series of glorious straight and on drives. Not even Reuben completing his best fielding of the year and saving a certain four at the non strikers end could halt his progress. When Sharpe fell for a well made 36 Copdock were rattling along at 6 an over with 81 on the board. Kaaarl and Arch then took the score on towards 150 before Arch clumped a waist high full toss from the ageing Hymas to long on where he was excellently pouched by Slemmings. Perhaps the Gods had been watching and remembered the previous game as at this point the fortunate Hymas was struck down with what appeared to be a tweak of the groin. Kaarl was joined by the Thomas who has been in a rich vein of form recently, but before they could form much of a partnership Kaarl was trudging back to the hutch and before he'd removed his pads Nose had joined him too. Nose now sticking his unusually large beak into the reckoning for the duck bat. Debutant Searle fell early too - if only the umpires arrival was as speedy as his decision he might not have been 20 mins late. Hoppy and then Harry aided Thomas in pushing on and enuring a position of dominance wasn't entirely squandered, though in truth as imposing as 247 looked it was perhaps 20 or even 30 shy of what looked possible with 15 overs to go.
In her last ever day at Flopdock Ziggy provided the best spread of the year (for tea). As the troops munched through some decent ham sarnies the clouds were being to amass. Nose 'elected' to open up the bowling from up the hill allowing Harry to charge in from the tennis court end. As has happened a few times this year Harry found luck not on his side as some late movement appeared to throw up some decent LBW appeals and ended up wicketless despite 5 decent overs. With the rain clouds gathering East JR entered the fray and was soon pulling off a catch that would earn him the Jazz Hat. Nose also picked up the wicket of leading league run scorer Hitchcock who slapped a half volley to ET at mid off. Stone, second in the league runs and King of Bardfield in the reverse fixture, was also soon back in the hutch after chipping to East JR to Hoppy at mid off. Jenkin picked up a fourth wicket as the rains fell and after a bizarre break for drinks the umpires finally could go on no more and the players came off with the match very much looking to be tilted in Flopdocks favour.
After a very reasonable wait East JR was pulled from the comfort of the home dressing room to agree the game was off. Disappointing way to finih the day but confirmation that the Scoobies are playing in Div 2 next year with promotion secured. Next week offers the chance to secure the title and ensure Ironfist goes into his saving not only for Trongs but also for the hotels and drinks.
Sombrero - Gravell, simply glorious.
Blooper - Nose. LOL.
Jazz Hat - East JR, blind ballroom turn as the ball went above the glasses eyeline followed by an ungracious fall.
TRONGS IS ON!
