Match report Following a week off the Scoobies resumed their league campaign with a home fixture against Haverhill. Despite everyone being given plenty of notice about the date of the free weekend several of the squad ‘miscalculated’ their dates and thus the team was an EFZ (East Free Zone), Eek making his son go to Harry Potter World, Nose and East wannabe Thomas sunning themselves on distant shores.
Even without these three megastars the side had a strong look about it with Gravell, South American legend Hollis, Mlambo, Bhatt and Cook all returning. After an excellent warm up in which the old uns whooped the young uns in the obligatory football match, it was Ironfists job to win the toss and he surprisingly obliged, inviting Haverhill to have a bowl on the usual Oval batting paradise.
There had been good news during the week as a spare panel umpire had been found to officiate – always a welcome sight, making the hunt for volunteers to umpire less of a chore.
Sharpe and Gravell got the innings off to a strong start, putting on 50 in no time before Reuben was undone by a good piece of bowling from Woodley. Run machine Kaaarl joined Archie and together they started to take the game away from Haverhill, Gravell with a series of trademark drives and pulls, Kaarl with his customary doggedness, taking advantage of anything loose. Archie reached an excellent ton and Karl another 50 as these two put on 150 for the second wicket.
Both were dismissed as they tried to accelerate the rate in the last few overs, with young Donald also falling cheaply to a sharp caught and bowled chance, and although the final total, 238/4, was a good one, it was perhaps 20 short of where we could have been.
Nonetheless, tea was taken in positive spirits, a young attack eager to make their mark on the game.
Ashwin and Harry opened up, and although both bowled with reasonable pace, neither were able to make the early breakthrough as Hartshorn, in particular, started to enjoy himself on the belter of a batting track. Haverhill had reached 50 odd by the time the 10th over had arrived and so it was the turn of Ironfist and Elliot to try and put a break on the scoring rate and get the wickets column moving. Ironfist duly managed to winkle out a couple of wickets in his first over and, after a short spell, turned to the experienced Jenkin to keep the pressure on Haverhill.
As Elliot gradually got into a decent rhythm, taking his first Copdock wicket, Jenko stepped up the pressure at the other end, soon after having Hartshorn well caught by the outstanding Gravell at mid-wicket. Donald replaced Elliot after his 8 over spell and, with Jenko, managed to dismiss a further 3 wickets as Haverhill got further and further behind the required rate.
Harry and Ashwin were brought back into the attack to finish the innings off but on a flat deck and despite no lack of effort, were unable to do so and Haverhill ended well short on 177/7.
A strong performance with some excellent batting and plenty of effort in the field. Gets us back on the winbus after the abandoned games when we were in winning positions and in good shape to push on for the second half of the season.
