Little Bardfield v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 18 Jun 2016 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 54 runs
Match report
Following the disappointing abandonment of the previous weeks game against Woolpit, when it seemed the 2s were on course for another strong victory against fellow promotion challengers, the team headed out to the middle of nowhere to face Little Bardfield.
As usual a number of changes were made to the team with Luke and Scott unavailable, Chilean legend Reg called up to the ones and Reuben suffering what has been termed ankle disintegration. Back in came club stalwart Cuff, young Dan Leggett following a successful call up to the threes over previous weeks and Ash following a break to recharge his batteries in Barthelona. The twos also welcomed back Harry Cook following his extended absence.
Huge organised another innovative warm up which took place whilst the home side were still sorting out the ground and despite some dodgy refereeing decisions the olduns and younguns shared an honourable draw in the rugger.
Despite the damp outfield and pitch, the absence of panel umpires meant that the game was started on time, with Gunder amazingly winning another toss, and unsurprisingly asking LB to bat first. Things started reasonably well in the field with Nose bowling with the new ball and wind and the slope and defending the longest straight boundary – Ash drew the short straw and bowled up the hill. Both produced decent spells, Nose picking up the wickets of both openers, both comprehensively bowled, and having the decency to tell one opener how he had gone wrong. Unfortunately, this batsman decided he didn’t like such useful advice and before too much longer he came out to ‘umpire’.
Eek replaced Ash at the bottom end for a couple of overs before it was Harry’s opportunity to turn his arm over. He produced a lively spell, hurrying all the batsmen and was unlucky not to pick up a number of wickets as the ball fell between fielders on several occasions. Nose was even unluckier as good chances were dropped off Stone who, with assistance, was to later make the Scoobies pay dearly. As Nose was rested, Eek came back on, this time from the top end, and wickets started to tumble, only the fortuitous Stone providing any meaningful resistance. Despite the drops a number of really good catches were snaffled by Dan, Kaarl and Archie and, after 34 overs the score stood at 100/5. However, it was at this point Stone and his batting partners started to throw caution to the wind, striking a number of maximums into the cornfield at the short end, and the LB total started to accelerate. Various combinations were tried with Nose, Ashwin and Harry attempting to stem the flow of runs, all to no avail, particularly as a number of options for dismissal seemed to have been removed. LB finished on an over par looking 231/7, Stone ending unbeaten (somehow) on 143 and none of the other batters getting more than 18.
A decent tea was taken in an almost funereal silence as the team took in the events of the last third of the innings. Although the pitch was playing much better than it looked, and the total required, not anywhere near ungettable, the subsequent batting display betrayed a side unhappy with some of the things that had gone on over the previous couple of hours and not fully focussed on the task ahead.
After a brief cameo from Gunder, who had decided to promote himself up the order, Archie was beginning to settle himself in for a long innings when the spirit and laws of cricket were reintroduced, Cuffy adjudging him caught behind when a clip of bat on buckle was a possible explanation to the noise heard. Not your fault Cuffy, you were just trying to be as fair as possible. Hugh got a goodun and then Nose became Kaarls latest victim, finding himself about 10 yards short as they tried to turn a one into a two ! As Kaarl started to rebuild the innings, partners came and went, Sexy stroking one effortless boundary through the covers before skying one to point in an attempt to up the run rate, Dan missing one which held its line and, after some powerful hitting, Cuffy was also dismissed. Eek managed to avoid a duck before missing an expansive drive and it was left to Ashwin to help Kaarl take the total to some respectability, and additional batting points.
A disappointing display in the end, unfortunately, with defeat by 54 runs in a rather surreal game. Time for the winbus to get back on track though and continue to challenge at the top half of the table.
Sachin Sombrero: Hugh for a terrific stumping – oh wait.
Tommy Cooper Blooper: Gunder for missing a straight full toss.
