Match report First Team Report Vs Wivenhoe – 2nd August Reuben Sharpe Day.

The first team, after getting back onto the winning path last week at the hard to find Maldon, were back at the fortress Old London Road and took on the mighty Hoe.

After some early morning rain the pitch was hard and had a greenish tinge to it. As always Jonesy had put in some tremendous work and Copdcok looked great. The outfield was glass like and the ground was perfect. The Hoe won the toss and bowled first in overcast conditions. Eek said he would certainly have bowled first too.

Nel was missing this week, as was Thomas, jazzing it up at a wedding. He did turn up to catch the start, in a dreadful pair of striped trousers. So in came Harvey, Ward played again as Copdock continue to push the youth. Sharpe was outrageously lucky to keep his place.

Copdock started, as only Copdock do, poorly. They were 17-2. Judus Jenkin, that cold hearted bar steward, after a sleepless week, got only 4, out scared… good. Gravell chased a very wide slow ball and was caught behind. So that meant that Sharpe and Swallow needed to rebuild. Chris started slowly, smashing his first four balls to the boundary, which set the tone. They put on 175 in 24 overs and simply smashed it everywhere. Sharpe batted like a god. Quite how he managed it is a complete mystery. However when he later took a catch, we all decided that from now on August the second will be remembered as Reuben Sharpe Day.

Even after Reuben went for 93 and Chris was adjudged LBW for 69 the run rate continued, with cameo’s from Nose, Knights and Harvey. Copdock finished on 302-7 and after questions about the batting in previous weeks, this was a fantastic effort from the boys.

After a great tea, supplied by nose, Copdock took to the field. The opening bowlers, Nose and Deon, for once, weren’t completely at the races and the mighty Wiv got a decent start. Deon did however get an early wicket. As has happened a few times this year, Chris and Eek came on a basically finished things off. They bowled 31 overs between them for only 87 runs and took 7 wickets. Eek got for and Chris, suffolk’s premiere all-rounder took 3.

Along the way Nose ran out the number three with a top swoop at midwicket. Then he bottled a catch and 15 year old Sasha had to take it to save his blushes. Jenko dropped a sitter, good, in front of his dad. AND even Reuben took a catch. Deon came back into the attack to scare the last man out and middle stump laying flat on the floor was a fitting end to a great day for the first team.

20 points earned and a big game next week against Mildenhall.

A really good performance, as a team, which drags things back to where we need them. Scott Harvey, great knock. Sharpey, OMG. Chris, top all round effort. Eek, great spell, Knightsy, the new Reuben??? Burchy, great comeback and top effort in the field. Although the Wiv reply was dull, the banter was top notch!! Even their pro loved it, he told me after the match……

The future’s bright, the future’s Copdock.
