Match report Phoenix Lack Fire at the Park

On a lovely shadow filled evening at Chantry Park, the Phoenix faced an enthusiastic IES side, fielding their entire squad of nine U11 boys. Fielding first our bowlers managed to keep the pace up with some confident line and length, resulting in a regular fall of wickets, with particular mention to wicket takers Luca, Finlay, Chris and Seb. Fielding was enthusiastic and focused: late stand-in “Gung-Ho Green” providing a solid (too many sausage rolls) performance behind the stumps. All looked well after 20 overs with a challenging but manageable target of 269 to chase, and the Phoenix were in the ascendency.

In reply, IES stunned all with an overwhelming display of bowling: wickets fell like skittles including an awesome Malinga-esque display (four wickets in consecutive balls) from a former Copdock player! When bat did contact ball, the fielding pinned us down and after a few run-outs, runs dried up and the scoreboard went into reverse. However, out of the embers of the dying day, the Phoenix batted with heart and courage, always believing that the 89 required from the last over was a distinct possibility!

Well-earned praise due to IES for a sterling performance, but also to the Phoenix for never giving up and salvaging experience and a good team spirit from the ashes of the game.
