Match report
So, given the Gunders Fixture Fiasco of earlier in the season the troops assembled, some in a more timely manner than others, for the final game of the season this week, earlier than the rest of the league. Ironfist himself absent this week, his Caribbean jaunt unrelated to the missing match fees. A changed side saw the return of gnarled old pro East taking over the reins, Percival having run out of social engagements returning and Fergus also into the side.
Following a successful toss (never bet against the queen) and a more relaxed warm up than the usual Ironfist regime Flopdock were to bat. Despite dwindling chances of promotion there were still things to play for. Reuben keener than a tramp on chips to pass both Gravells runs total and 600 for the season, Percival desperate to protect his average that was falling quicker than a Plummet Airways 747 and Kaaaarl 'NeverEnding' Storey looking for another couple of run out notches on his coffin. Reuben and Hoppy opened up, Reuben survived two early chances and soon got past Archie (having batted only 8 times more) and 600 runs. Hoppy also found some flowing form with Fergus trying hard to keep both book and board updated. With the score closing in on 100 Reuben past fifty and found a way to chip back to bowler Lesiak for 51. Storey soon after accounted for Hopkins as they sauntered back for a fourth. Hollis then somehow managed to scoop a Stockton delivery to cover in 'the worst dismissal of my career'. Ever generous and hopeful to make Reg feel better Percival went soon after, having been watchful in defence for a few overs his eyes lit up at the sight of a ten year old losing up. The sweet thief's eyes lit up at a floated ball outside off stump but he managed only to chip to cover. In true Copdock fashion the wheels were beginning to come off as Fergus joined Kaaaarl at the crease. These two managed to rebuild and after Fergus went looking to increase the rate Jenko entered the fray and looked to push on with 'Toy' Storey. Karl passed his 50 before falling on his sword at the end missing out on another red inker, though Jenko was not to be denied.
Tea was excellent. Hugo Douglas had more on his plate than even Gauke could have seen off. Ridiculous. Over an impressive tea the talk was that 216 was enough, on a slow pitch even if we could and probably should have got nearer 250. Percival (more Septic Peg than Mystic Meg), was so confident that we'd we he pronounced '97, they won't get more than 97'.
Douglas and Jenkin opened the bowling. Douglas lasting 3 overs before pulling the ladder up. By this time Jenkin had made a break through courtesy of a wild hack from Edwards. East brought himself into the fray after Douglas and soon got rid of the potentially irritating Stockton courtesy of a good grab by young Jacob Marston. Addison and Lesiak briefly threatened to get some respectability for Coggy, though Jekin and East had brought the scoring rate to a grinding halt. The introduction of TomaGauke saw a flurry of wickets fall and all that was left was to see if Gauke or East would get to five first and finish the game off. Clearly Reuben was rooting for East, perhaps guilty over not completing the promised gardening as was Fergus. Both deliberately (it can only have been deliberate) spilling chances of Gauke Scratchings before East fittingly picked up the final wicket of the season and his fifth of the match with an unusual 8-1 off side field.
A great final game, on the back of some good late performances. Ultimately other results mean it won't be enough for promotion but clear signs that there is enough talent within the team and that next year Div 2 is in our sights.
