Match report
Sooner than most would have thought, the seconds came together looking to build upon the nailbiting burglary of Woodbridge. Again Ironfist demonstrated his power and authority by insisting upon yet another Bank Holiday Fixture. A strong looking team with plenty of batting assembled at the Oval for a warm up of touch rugby (some excellent fly half kicking the highlight) and watched Gunders promptly loose the toss and unsurprisingly get sent out to field. Perhaps more surprisingly Coggy 2's opening pair included last seasons Div 1 recording breaking run scorer and current first team professional.
It quickly became apparent that the twos could be up against it. After Ironfist gave Cleaver a life on ten off the accurate and probing Thomas he set about quickly accumulating his first 50 runs with a superlative range of strokeplay. Wickets fell at the other end but Cleaver threatened to take Coggy out of sight. Flopdock stuck manfully to their task in the field, led by the energetic Kingstone and Cull. East and Ironfist slowed the scoring rate down but a well constructed partnership for the 5th wicket between Bragg and Cleaver put Coggy in sight of 250+. A Cull inspired run out saw the back of Cleaver after an excellent hundred. No doubt he will be able to add the prestigous 'Highest Div 3 batting average' to last seasons accolade on his return to New Zealand. Following his dismissal Copdock, through East and Hopkins (having replaced the tiring and ageing Ironfist) Copdock managed to limit the late flurry, Bragg bringing up his 50 in the latter stages. The search for Hopkins first wicket goes on, this week East and Gravell letting balls through their fingers. The innings closed with Coggy on 211 for 7 and at tea spirits were high as Holland hadn't already eaten the pizza (after Saturdays pizzagate) and the target seemed in reach with a strong batting order strengthened by Cull's inclusion.
The Copdock reply began falteringly as Reuben first pulled a half volley to the boundary then snicked off to be pouched at first slip by Cleaver off the bowling of Cross. Gravell was joined by Cull and they began to move Copdock forward with purpose. Gravell in particular looking in fine fettle. A chanceless fifty from Gravell was brought up in the 16th over. The knock was of such quality it could easily be compared to the earlier brilliance of Cleaver. It came as a surprise when Archie, looking to clip Bragg over mid wicket, was well snaffled by the tumbling Cross. Kinga and Cull began the rebuilding but found scoring difficult as Bragg settled in to his long spell, bowling accurately with few bad balls on offer. As the rate began to rise, wickets began to fall. First Kinga wandered out of his crease, perhaps thinking Dibsy had called him through for a single and was stumped, then shortly after reaching fifty Dibsy was caught sweeping. As Holland joined Thomas at the crease the game was still in the balance with 58 needed of 8 overs.
Despite a valiant effort from Holland and Thomas we were never quite able to get the rate under control. Things could easily have been different on another day, having pulled us to the brink, with 9 needed off 9 balls Teeth crunched two consecutive balls at fielders. With 8 needed off the last over Bragg yorked the inventive Holland and there was just too much for Ethan and Adam to do and we fell 3 short.
A disappointing finish but a performance to be proud of. A match which encapsulates the journey the team are on. A performance in advance of many of last years (and even this years) against a team which it cold be argued would perform well in division 1 (indeed some of their players have been this year). It clearly represents the great progress being made, but the progress required to get to the next level.
Brian Lara Tiara - Gravell. Great knock.
Tommy Cooper Blooper - Ironfist. Bank holiday fixture, lost toss, dropping the pro.
