Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Bury St Edmunds II on Sat 09 May 2015 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 90 runs
Match report
Following 4 successive victories this year despite Ironfists attempts at sabotage by arranging Bank Holiday fixtures, and 13 undefeated at the end of last year, Copdock 2's congregated at the Oval full of confidence.
Our Fuhrer was always likely to make some changes in his search for perfection. Sexy was promoted to the 1st's following his strike rate against Brockerly, Gravell taking inspiration from previous excuses from Jenkin/Nel was 'flat hunting' and there was no place for Steve GaukeSprung Durch Technik'. In came Sumo Nel now his ear was better and having recovered from his dodgy meat feast Tom Jenkin.
Ironfist had been studying Hugh's warm up last week and was keen to implement something similar this week to make up for some of the previous shambolic affairs and as the weather clouded up we were put through our paces. As Graham clothed the ball short of the intended targets for catches drizzle filled the air and soon the chat from gnarled old pros East and Wooton was whether Ironfist would make them hang around until midnight and whether the damp would lead to Scott contracting trench foot after last weeks 'BootGate'. Luckily the weather passed, though the spectre of the poor length of the catches always threatened to come back to haunt everyone.
As Ironfist lost the toss and Copdock were put into bat, Ashwin lost the 'coffee ball' and was sent off into the kitchen. Scott hid in the car and East was collared for umpiring duty with Ironfist. Nel and Sharpe opened up on a third game pitch which still looked to be packed full of runs. Contrasting starts from the two openers as Nelly quickly found his range with a six over extra cover whilst Reuben looked like he had forgotten how to hold a bat for the first 6 overs. During the week social media had highlighted the dangers of #Run Out King, though Nelly had clearly been reading his volume of 'Running with Reubs' and demonstrated an excellent example of the back turn to avoid danger in the second over. After a breezy 29 Nelly tried one shot too many and skied the ball to point allowing him to put his feet up and tuck into a few pre tea sandwiches and was replaced by John 'Harry Lime' Percival. Clearly avid readers of previous match reports and @johneast9 social media updates Bury met the arrival of Harry Lime with the removal of third man and soon the boundaries were flowing. Sharpe also found fluency, particularly against the spin, using his feet and driving sweetly down the ground, one cover drive in particular was called by a spectator to be 'Jerv Like' - there can be no higher praise.
Having advanced the score to 127 for 1 off 25 overs we were well set to push towards Mondays total of 252 but two quick wickets, Reuben shortly after his 50 and Jenko's run out, put the brakes on. After a short delay for rain Harry Lime and Adam 'Jos Buttler' Hopkins began the rebuilding. Initially the big shots coming from JP, including successive 6's to bring up his 3rd half century in 5 innings for the club but after he fell for 75 Adam took up the reigns. Some strong sweeps and hitting from Adam, including a cheeky back of the bat sweep through first slip some him reach 50 in the last over and able Reg Hollis support saw Copdock amass 237 for 5 off their full allotment.
Talk at tea, after everyone had recovered from Ironfist not waiting for the opposition, was that this was a good score on a decent track, and very defendable.
The Bury innings started slowly though Ashwin and Ironfist were unable to make a breakthrough in the first 10 overs the rate was already at over 6 an over required. The introduction of Jenkin and East saw wickets begin to fall. Things could have been worse for Bury when TJ Hooker lured their number 4 into a frantic hack when on 0 (having already survived a large LBW shout) and the ball looped nicely to East at slip. Perhaps still angry at Jenko's late Monday call off East inexplicably grassed the chance. It would be fair to say that harder catches have been taken before. Short of somebodys trousers falling down and them impaling themselves on the stumps it appeared that the Tommy Cooper Blooper award was safe in East's hands. In fact most of the team were expecting Ironfist to trot off at drinks and get it for East to field the rest of the game in. This incident aside wickets continued to fall (and JP continued to move the sightscreen) as the run rate went up and up. East, Jenkin, Nel all picking some up. A relatively straightforward victory was confirmed by Ashwin coming back to get the final wicket.
Ultimately a strong performance, though still not quite at maximum levels in the field. The win bus rolls on, the wait for JP's first ever hundred continues.
