Match report A lovely warm bank holiday afternoon and a track that looked like it was full of runs, what more could you ask for; and so the skipper promptly lost the toss. Not surprisingly Colchester elected to bat.
Jamie Smith making a rare appearance showed why we miss him, opening up with a maiden over.
Oliver Williams then had the perfect start to his season, his first ball pitching on middle and hitting the top of off stump, 0 for 1 from 7 balls.
Jamie kept it tight and Oliver took the wickets 17 for 3 after 12 overs. Colchester rallied a little with Harry Harvey being very unlucky, a spell of 5 for 24 not representing the fact that all the runs came off the edge none of which went to hand.
Playing in only his second adult game Jack Spinner (14) bowing off breaks to live up to his name, claimed 1 for 25 in his 4 overs, and the every reliable Searle and Wilkinson Seniors kept the pressure on, Colchester finishing on 178 for 9 after their 45 overs. On a pitch where we would have been happy keeping them down to 250 a really good performance in the field.
Oliver Williams finished with 5 for 26 off 9 overs and Jamie Smith 2 for 24 off 10 overs.
In reply we got off to a brisk start with Harry Harvey promoted to open with the every reliable Dave Searle. Harry looked classy stroking some beautiful drives all along the ground before falling for 18. Dave looked rusty being dropped 4 times acquiring his first 20 runs. Colchester were made to pay, Dave getting to 99 before playing a reckless shot to a ball that was never there to be swept resulting in the loss of his middle stump.
Archie Wilkinson was back to form after a disappointing season last year making a sound 32. There was a little flurry of wickets as the rain came down and we pushed to finish things quickly, however the win was secured by 4 wickets with the every maturing Matt Searle keeping a cool head to bring us home with 8 overs to spare.
