Wivenhoe II v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 26 Jul 2014 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
A full report will be compiled by our man at the match Ethan Wright
After arriving at Wivenhoe on a sultry Saturday afternoon the second XI set their minds on extending their unbeaten run to 7 games. However there had been many changes from the week before with some members of last weeks winning team being called up to the first XI, tweeter extraordinaire John East swanning off on holiday, Hugh Thomas being called into work and Ashwin (what do you want!) Bhatt going to Amsterdam of all places. Those that have played at Wivenhoe before may have experienced their interesting style in welcoming their opponents and Saturday was no different, while preparing to go out and field first, after Graham had called the coin toss wrong again and we were put into the field I felt the need to relieve myself before going out onto the field. I chose a place to do this out of the view of everyone but before I could start I heard a bellowing voice from the opposition angrily telling me to use the portable toilets, I immediately apologised but this was not enough for the rotund Mr Kelly who did not accept my apology with any grace creating a tense atmosphere before a ball had even been bowled.
After tense pre game rapport between the two sides and presenting Tom Jenkin with a Glass tankard for 200 first XI wickets we entered the field. Controversy quickly re-entered the game in the first over with Harry Cook steaming in down the hill. The young opening batsman couldn’t handle the pace and edged a very full ball to first slip caught low down by Graham. The entire team celebrated as even from square leg it was clear that the young man was out, he stood his ground and was unbelievably given not out by his own father Mr Kelly. After a few protestations and an altercation where the charming Mr Kelly told me to go away with language that you would not utter in polite company we got on with our work. Harry Cook bowled a brilliant first spell beating the bat numerous times and getting a wicket with support from the skipper at the other end.
After grahams spell Jenko came on at the bottom end and on a dry pitch started to cause havoc changing the game through bowling a brilliant spell of 5 for 49 off 15 where he dismissed Master Kelly eventually for 34. Effort in the field was not in short supply either with a notable mention for Paul Hollis who took two catches and in trying to save a boundary dived through a picket fence. Great support for Jenko was given at the other end by Harry who was unlucky to only claim two wickets and Clive and Paddy Young both played their part in restricting Wivenhoe second XI to 159 for 9 off their 45 overs.
After a brilliant tea was put on by the hosts St Archie and Ruben strode out to the crease on a pitch that was starting to slow up and crumble. Both the opening batsman made brilliant starts with the ball racing away to the boundary. Unfortunately Ruben drove one to many times and popped up an easy catch. I than came and went quickly while St Archie continued on assuredly being joined at the crease by Paul who played some exquisite shots for his 22 and was caught out by a brilliant catch on the boundary rather unfortunately as the young man hadn’t caught anything cleanly all day and then took a screamer out on the deep square boundary. With still around 50 runs to get and an out of touch Richard (best fielder in the club) Sexton coming to the crease the more experienced Copdock campaigners were fearing a collapse. After a brilliant innings St Archie then tried the sweep one to many times and was caught behind off the spinner down the leg side after making 73 maintaining his Bradman like record and teaching Wivenhoe a lesson in integrity by walking. Dutchy then joined Sexy at the crease in a ginger partnership which steadied the ship and brought us home in style with Dutchy smashing a six to win the game comfortably with 12.2 overs to spare.
It was another great performance by the lads especially from Jenko on his return from injury and St Archie continuing his great form in the second XI and by the end me and Mr Kelly had come to an understanding and the bad feeling at the start of the game had dissipated. Hopefully we can make it 8 in a row next week and continue are push for promotion.
