Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 60 runs
Match report
Sexton Stars In Local Derby Victory
June 14th will, from this moment, be known as Sir Richard Sexton Day after his match winning century dragged Copdock from the brink of a disastrous defeat to local rivals Ipswich at Clay Hall and spurred the side to a memorable victory.
After a sunny week it was typical that Saturday should dawn with overcast skies and about 10 degrees cooler than the day before - at least it wasn't raining!
There was some early injury / illness news for the 2s as Brad reported sick. Fortunately, Harry Cook was able to rearrange his social engagements and return to the side for his second appearance of the season.
The toss was won by home skipper Manning who decided to invite Copdock to bat first. Somewhat surprisingly John E volunteered to take the first spell of umpiring although it soon became evident that he must have known what was going to happen as Southall and Knight left the top order in tatters. By the end of the 7th over the 2s were 28/4 with Reuben, Ethan, Olly and Clive all back in the hutch and John had finished his stint in the middle for the day !
To be fair both the Ipswich openers bowled well and it looked as if all hopes rested on Felix, another returnee to the side after finishing at 'uni' for the summer, with Richard.
Felix batted superbly for an elegant 29 before playing perhaps one shot too many and was caught at cover leaving the Scoobies languishing at 47/5 in the 10th over and staring down the barrel of a crushing defeat.
This left Sir Richard of Sexton to bat with the lower order and tail for the best part of 35 overs. Although his partners came and went King Richard continued to bat sensibly, manoeuvring the field with some well placed shots on both sides of the wicket and running positively. As the total moved on to 112 with Rich and John at the crease hopes began of a competitive total of 150ish to bowl at. Then disaster struck as John was run out backing up - that's twice in two weeks we have suffered similar dismissals.
Scott strode to the crease with his Captains orders ringing in his ears - 'use up the overs, get your head down and bat for Richard' - which he complied with for a couple of overs before smashing a huge six and two fours off one Elford over ! Scotts cameo helped move the total over the 150 mark and when he was out at 167/8 Ipswich heads were already starting to drop. Cooky joined Lord Richard at the wicket who now started to express himself batting out of his skin to push the total over 200, getting to his second ton of the season in the process and dreamland for the rest of the Copdock side. It was good to see a firm handshake offered as congratulations when Richard reached his superb landmark ! When his majesty was last out at 209 the momentum had firmly shifted towards Copdock. This was evident at teas as the glum faces from earlier were full of smiles and animated discussion about what had occurred took place over the egg sandwiches.
Copdock took to the field with a spring in their step and it was not long before the opening partnership of Harry and Ashwin got their first scalps to reduce Ipswich to 41/3. Ashwin's bizarre cry of 'What do you want !!' as he comprehensively bowled Scott was a highlight of the match - perhaps he has been listening to too much Status Quo ?
Despite a good innings from Bumphrey, the change bowlers, Clive and John gradually put the squeeze on Ipswich. Although Clive was let down by a number of catches being dropped off his bowling John picked up wickets with regularity and finished his spell with 4/23 (Incidentally this means that John has now taken approximately 420 wickets for the club, several more than his brother, but not apparently entitling him to membership of the 400 club !)
After Ashwin and Harry returned to mop up the tail, Copdock were able to celebrate a much needed victory by the comfortable margin of 60 runs as fears of being dragged into the bottom two dissipated.
Sir Richard was quite simply brilliant, an innings of real substance, particularly when put in the context of the game and match situation he found himself in. The rest of us have got to up our games if we are to take advantage of the momentum this victory has hopefully given us.
Next week it's East Bergholt at home so it doesn't get any easier - lets hope those selected perform at the levels of which they are capable.
