Match report
Further Gloom for the 2s
A much changed Copdock and OI second string suffered a second successive defeat against Yoxford.
Once again it was the batting effort which let the team down as Copdock slumped from 83/2 to a miserable 111 all out, the vast majority of the wickets being gifted to the East Suffolk outfit. A spirited bowling and fielding effort gave the scoobies some hope of an unlikely victory but defending a small total on a small ground with 54 overs available to chase the target meant the odds were always against them.
For those of you unfamiliar with the ground at Yoxford, it has short boundaries, particularly straight, and there are two trees in play which overhang the playing area meaning that a chip 30 yards to mid-wicket at one end is six – ideal for Copdocks spin attack !
After losing the toss on a warm spring day, Copdock were asked to bat by the home captain. Holland and Sharpe strode purposefully to the wicket and got us off to a start of sorts before both fell to catches at mid on - 28/2. Sexton and Allerton, gradually built a solid partnership and were looking good as we advanced to 78/2 at drinks. I’m not sure what was put in the mid innings refreshment, however, after the restart, Copdock imploded as wicket after wicket fell to the home attack. Despite another impressive knock from Brad Mason, by the time 36 overs had been bowled we were all out for a paltry 111. Wickets fell at such a pace that East barely had time to tweet updates on the state of play.
Fortunately the dreaded Copdock collapse had been anticipated by the home tea lady and so the sandwiches were ready despite the innings closing 9 overs ahead of schedule.
Yoxford would have been very confident of knocking the small total off with comparative ease, on a pitch, which contained no demons, however, the Dock refused to surrender meekly, and produced a bowling and fielding display of which they can feel, justifiably, proud. Opening up with the guile of East and the ageing Underwood runs were hard to come by and chances were being created. A number of very close shouts for LBW were turned down by the home side including a very confident appeal, in the second over against Mears on 0, who continued to ride his luck throughout his innings. Despite drying up the run rate and a number of near misses, wickets were proving elusive and so the Capt turned to the seam of Sexton and the spin of Mason to change the team’s fortunes. Both came up trumps and struck in their first overs leaving Yoxford 69/4 after 27 overs. Unfortunately this heralded a potentially match winning partnership between Mears and M Lincoln who added 30 valuable runs - very, very slowly.
As the partnership developed, a final roll of the dice came when East was reintroduced from the ‘very short Tree End’, however, although he went for only 6 runs in 6 testing overs he wasn’t able to make the inroads needed and couldn’t add to his wickets tally – again some further seemingly very adjacent appeals were turned down with Mears twice more being the fortunate recipient. Sorry Eek, that’s Div 4 for you ! Meanwhile, Mason continued to wheel away at the ‘just slightly longer Road End’ and produced a consistently accurate spell, his best yet for the club. Brad finally managed to break the partnership at 99/5 before a couple of loose deliveries released the shackles and Yoxford moved to 110.
Then the fun started. East, having bowled out his allocation of 18 overs came off and back came the irrepressible Sexton as Yoxford collapsed to 111/8 - Brad snaffling a further 2 wickets and Sexton 1. In the words of SAF it was ‘squeaky bum time’ as hopes of a miraculous tie increased but sadly this was not to be as an uncharacteristic legside delivery from Sexton was adjudged wide and defeat was confirmed with 46 overs having been bowled.
So, there is clearly not a lot wrong with two aspects of our performances – no prizes for guessing where we need to improve.
