Match report Bad day at the office !

Saturday’s trip to West Suffolk to play promoted Tuddenham proved to be a chastening experience for the Copdock second string as they were comprehensively defeated.

After winning the toss, Underwood had no hesitation in asking the home side to bat first on a very green wicket. Tom Jenkin and Underwood himself opened up for the 2s. Jenko bowled with his usual immaculate consistency, and soon picked up the crucial wicket of R Cross, however, Underwood’s spell was interspersed with too many ‘four balls’ and after 6 overs he gave way to John East. The experienced duo bowled with superb control but not much luck as a number of seemingly very adjacent shouts for LBW were turned down by the home umpires. The small ground meant that the batsman gained full value for their shots and at drinks the run rate was looking very healthy for the West Suffolk outfit. The break seemed to bring a change of fortune for the Dock as wickets started to tumble and East broke his duck with the ball for the 2s by bowling the classy, D Cross, who had been one of the fortunate batsman on the end of some ‘close’ umpiring decisions, just after he had passed 50. Champagne moment of the day followed as a raucous and joyful Eek celebrated wildly – hopefully this was the first of many wickets for him this season. Brad Mason replaced Jenko at the hedge end and after a couple of loose deliveries, bowled a good spell without much luck. Wickets started to fall more regularly as the innings drew to a close, although Tuddenham kept up a reasonable strike rate and at tea they finished on what looked like a gettable score of 202/7. Jenko and Eek were the pick of the bowlers, both completing 15 overs, with figures of 3/53 and 4/55 respectively. In general the bowling had been good and the fielding was also of a high standard. Mention must also be made of Richard Sexton, asked to bowl two overs at the death of the innings and on another day would have picked up a couple of wickets.

After tea, Copdock opened with Dutch Holland and new recruit, Matt Wareing, on the road to recovery from injury suffered before the start of the season. After Dutch managed to edge his first ball for 4, the Tuddenham bowlers took control, and, with the assistance of a reintroduction of the LBW law, the Dock collapsed to 12/4, then 28/6. Despite a couple of cameo innings from Ian Swallow and Brad, the innings subsided to 70 all out, with 4 LBWs and 2 run outs, and a crushing 132 run defeat.

So, a half decent performance for the first half the game but, with a couple of exceptions, a really poor second half. Let’s hope for better next week when we face Wivenhoe at the Oval.
