Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 24 runs

Match report Twos win another tight one !

Well we don't do things easily but the 2s managed another victory against Hadleigh this afternoon to keep the run going and maintain our dreams of promotion.Victory was achieved with some stand out performances by James Hodgkinson, Martin Taylor and Sam Handley.

After three fixtures against sides in the top four the Scoobies faced Hadleigh at home on a warm day at the Copdock Oval. Hadleigh are currently in the bottom half of the table but are a side who have seemed to get the better of us more often than not in recent seasons.
To use a sporting analogy, a quote by (I think) Sir Bobby Robson that there are no easy international games seems to apply in much the same way for Division 4 of the Two Counties league, particularly where Copdock are concerned !

The 2s team contained a number of changes - James Hodgkinson, Harry Cook, Martin Taylor and Ethan Wright coming in for Kris Bostock, Cuffy, Ricey and Hugh.

After winning the toss for the second week running Gunder decided that the Dock should bat first, a decision mainly based around the glorious weather !

The usually solid opening partnership of Reuben and Dutch opened up, however, Dutch went first ball and it was not long before we were 24/3 - Reuben left one and was bowled and then Ted 'Olympic' Baker chased a wideish half volley to nick behind.

So, up against it, Hodge and Eef set about rebuilding the inning. Both were playing well and looking comfortable before disaster struck again, both batters smashing long hops to mid wicket where they were well caught by Ben Drury (with catching like that he should surely keep without gloves in the future !)

So, five wickets down on a 250+ wicket would this be another infamous Flopdock collapse ? Most certainly not ! Commeth the hour commeth the men in the shape of young Sam H and our marvellous coach / curator, M Taylor. After stabilising the innings they put on an invaluable partnership to get us close to the 150 mark. It was great to see Sam get a score, particularly in such tough circumstances and against his former teammates. Soggy seems to excel in these situations and is a Captains dream. content to bat and bowl(and play !) wherever asked he is real example to the rest of the team.
After Sam was caught Soggy kept up the momentum with Scotty W playing a nice cameo innings before falling to a top catch at backward point.
Sogs remained unbeaten and saw us up to just above the 200 mark at the innings close. Not as many as we would have wanted but at least we had something to defend.

As everyone 'enjoyed' Gunder's music selection in the home dressing room we emphasised the need to bowl stump to stump and give nothing away in the field.

Harry Cook, in for his first game this season bowled an excellent opening spell and was desperately unlucky as ball after ball passed the outside edge. Although we managed to dismiss one of the openers, it was not long before the Captain turned to his spin twins Gaukey and Sam H.
Both bowled reasonably well on a pitch which didn't seem to offer as much assistance as we thought it would, and picked up a wicket each as Hadleigh tried to up the scoring rate. Opener Rix could not be shifted, however, and with young Manthorpe, Hadleigh started to make a big dent in the Dock score.
At 30 over drinks the away side were looking favourites and it was decided a bowling change was needed.
On came Hodge from the bottom end and instantly found a good rhythm, bowling with good pace and in good areas. After a couple of tight overs with the run rate starting to climb, Hodge managed to induce a nick by Rix who was comfortably caught by keeper Wootton. This seemed to inspire Sam who managed to eliminate any loose deliveries the longer his spell went on. Hodge continued to take wickets as the Hadleigh tail tried to hit back and finished with an excellent 4 / 24 from his 7 over stint. Sam bowled an excellent 15 overs taking 1/49 and Harry came back for the last few overs getting the wicket his efforts had deserved.

So we came through in the end and achieved victory by 24 runs. The sense of relief was palpable but it was great to see such strength of character, team spirit and a never say die attitude which saw us home.

My man of the match is split three ways this week - Hodge for his elegant 35 runs and superb bowling, Sam H for his courageous batting and top draw spell of bowling and finally Soggy for his innings defining knock of 46* (worth double in the context of the match and season)

Next week we play Ipswich at home. I'm pretty sure they will be wanting to prove a point after our win against them earlier in the season so we will need to be ready and motivated.

COME ON !!!!!

There will be music again - any requests !!!!
