Match report Seconds finish all square at Bergholt

The 2s made the short trip to face second in the table East Bergholt, after a confidence boosting win against the current Div 4 leaders, Woolpit last Saturday.
There were, again, enforced changes to the side - Sharpe, Bostock, Jenkin and Rice coming in for Wright, Bhatt, Cuff and Tom Bigg.

The team were greeted by a warm(ish) day in Constable Country and although the square looked in good order the Bergholt groundsman was on holiday so the outfield had remained uncut !

Another toss lost by Gunder meant that the Dock were inserted. After a couple of tight first overs Reuben and KB started to find the middle of their bats. KB in particular punished anything slightly loose with a cover drive for six being a particular highlight. The openers moved the total to 20 before Reuben chipped one to mid on.
Kris B joined Banham and these two set about the task of building a foundation for the innings. As pace was taken off the ball by Bergholt with the home side bowling well on a slow pitch, run scoring became more difficult. After making 36 both batters perished trying to force the pace and after 30 overs we were 97/3. Despite not looking in any trouble TJ and Ricey also found quick runs hard to come by. After TJ was caught, Sam H and then Olympic legend Baker provided some impetus over the past 5 overs with some positive running between the wickets. In fact it has just been confirmed that London 2012's Baker set a few new PBs !

We closed the innings on 150/5 which, in all honesty, even with the slow outfield, was probably at least 30 runs short of where we wanted to be. But - as in all these situations, the runs were on the board !

Having managed to wake the ailing VC and wicketkeeper Wootton from his drug induced coma, just in time for him to pad up before the end of our innings it was encouraging to see him tuck into the Bergholt pizza at tea. What was less satisfactory were the dribble marks he had left on the sofa he had been blissfully snoring way on not 15 minutes earlier !

The Bergholt innings started with TJ and Stevie Catch opening up. These two masters of accuracy and guile really put the squeeze on the home batters who found runs extremely hard to come by. As the pressure built wickets started to fall and after 30 overs Bergholt were 58/5. Unfortunately two of their best batters were now at the crease, Capt Gedney and Copdock close season target Kevin Holland. These two were both quickly into their stride and, despite riding their luck at times, they started to eat into the Copdock total, moving it to 100 before Sam H had Gedney well caught in the deep by Kris B.
Having been in control for a long period of the innings the momentum had started to swing back to Bergholt and despite another good catch by Kris B to account for Philpott, Holland was still at the crease, even though he had survived a very confident run out appeal earlier in his innings.
As the target moved closer, Sam H, now bowling really well, had Holland bowled with a goodun'. Despite losing wickets, Bergholt continued their push for victory and as we came to the last over they needed 8 to win.
Young Sam, was given the onerous task of bowling this over and he did an excellent job, restricting the batting side to 6 runs off the first 5 balls.
So, it was 2 runs to win off the last ball - Bergholt managed a streaky inside edge off the pad into the legside and the sides were level.

So a tense and tight affair with both sides holding the upper hand at various stages. Despite our disappointment at not forcing the victory, we showed great determination to make sure we didn't lose as things got close towards the end.

Unfortunately the sides around us all won, however, none of them are out of sight and we face another of our rivals, Great Bromley, next Saturday.

Still everything to play for - we march on !

My Man of the Match is shared this week by TJ and Stevie Catch - two magnificent bowling performances.
