Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Woolpit II on Sat 22 Jun 2013 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 10 runs
Match report
Back to the Future II
Copdock's second string put together a solid all round performance to reinvigorate their promotion hopes and defeat current Div 4 leaders, Woolpit.
After the aborted match at Chantry Park last week the Scoobies were back in action in what was billed as a must win game to close the gap on our opponents and keep the team in the hunt at the top of the table. As seems to be the case every week there were a number of enforced changes to the starting line up. Sharpe was called up by the 1s, whilst Bostock, Rice and Davey were unavailable. Into the side came Cuff, Ethan Wright (Wright Wright), Stevie Catch and Ashwin Bhatt.
On the morning of the match the side was dealt a further blow as chairman Gauke was forced to pull out with a back injury - apparently it's due to him carrying the club for several years ! Luckily a more than able replacement was found in the shape of Tom Bigg.
As both sides warmed up under dark and cloudy skies, the captains tossed the coin and, surprise, surprise, Gunder lost, Woolpit choosing, unsurprisingly in the conditions, to bowl first.
The Dock suffered a a couple of early blows when first (Fireman)Sam H was adjudged LBW and then coach / curator / mentor Taylor was caught behind by the evergreen Crame, diving in front of first slip.
After these early losses, Banham, batting at three, with the new bat he refuses to go anywhere without, and Olympic legend Baker, got the innings on track. Banham in particular struck the ball with superb timing and raced to 30 in no time. After London 2012's Baker nicked one to the keeper, 'Village' Cuff joined the fray and the experienced duo continued to keep up the momentum, mixing studied defence with controlled aggression in conditions marginally favouring the side bowling. Cuff in particular seems have enjoyed a new lease of life with his batting after his regular Wednesday physio sessions - what are the ladies doing to him ?
The fifth wicket partnership was looking good to build a substantial total when disaster struck and both these two titans of the 2nd XI were caught going for shots they no doubt subsequently regretted.
So five down with under a hundred on the board, the balance of the game seemed to be back with Woolpit, however, the middle order of Eeef, Tom B and Vice Captain Wootton had other ideas and it was these three who helped post a reasonable total of 171 having used up our allocation of overs. Probably 50 short of what would have been ideal but - the runs were on the board !
The Woolpit innings started with Eeef opening up from the bottom end but after a couple of wayward overs, struggling with his line and an injured knee he was taken out of the attack. At the other end Stevie Catch was, well, Stevie Catch ! His line and length were immaculate, difficult to score runs off and always threatening the batters. After Ashwin (who had replaced Eeef)removed one of the openers with a wide half tracker slapped to Ted (Olympic) Baker at cover, Stevie removed the next two batsmen, both LBW, both plumb in front of all three.
After an indifferent first over, Ash was now bowling in consistently good areas, causing all the batsmen problems, and, a couple of overs before drinks removed West, comprehensively bowled.
A double change was made to the attack at drinks with Sam and KB coming on. After a brief recovery by Woolpit, the wickets started to fall again as the run rate increased.
At 135/9 with 7 overs remaining it looked like job done for the Dock, however, Woolpit capt Julian Bradwell had other ideas, striking the ball cleanly and finding the gaps to edge his team towards an unlikely victory. Ash came back to replace KB and helped to stem the flow of runs before, in the penultimate over, Bradwell was caught trying to hit another four over the infield.
Relief and joy then for the victorious Copdock team who's effort and work rate had been excellent. This had been a hard fought match played in the right spirit.
Several choices for my man of the match this week; Sam H with his four for, Stevie Catch and Ash after their superb bowling spells but the standout candidate was KB for his all round performance with both bat and ball.
Next week we play East Bergholt in what is again a 'must win' encounter !
Come on you Scoobies !
