Clacton II v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 01 Jun 2013 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Super Sam Smashes Seasiders !

Copdock's second string continued their excellent recent run of form with a convincing victory at Clacton, with Sam Webb-Snowling keeping up the proud tradition (this season) of wicket keeper batsmen making centuries on their debuts for the Scoobies !

A much changed side took to the field following a rather tortuous journey just to get past the roadworks in Clacton town centre. Missing from the team that had beaten Wivenhoe on Bank Holiday Monday were Ed Pope, Dutch Holland, Kris Bostock, Felix Ward, (Village) Cuff and chef de partie, Jamie Smith (claiming he couldn't play as he was catering for three weddings - pathetic !!). Luckily the quality of replacements was excellent and also (for us old gits) pleasingly youthful in the shape of Sam Webb-Snowling, Sam Handley, Patrick Young, Jonny Rice, Ethan Wright(Wright Wright). Just to ensure that the seconds retained an element of experience coach Taylor also returned to the starting line up.

So it was in confidence that we made the journey to a place that never disappoints when it comes to seeing some of the stranger aspects of human behaviour as well as being a potential banana skin as we strive to build on our good start to the season.

A firm pitch with a good covering of grass greeted us but, with the cloudy overhead conditions, on winning the toss Gunder decided the Dock should field first.

Ethan W (W W) fresh from his monthly train journey from Reading, opened up from the large piece of open park end which usually has a fairground on it. His previous appearance resulted in the near capitulation of a Hadleigh batsman so I am happy to report that no such near misses occurred today. In fact Ethan, or Eeth as we call him, bowled with good pace and was unlucky not to pick up a couple of wickets for his efforts. His control was still a bit awry in the early overs, however, this was actually just a cunning plan to give Sam W-S, behind the stumps a good work out and stretch !
Gunder rolled (sorry creaked) his arm over at the other end and, despite a giving away a few extras, Clacton reached drinks at under three an over with 2 wickets down.
Just after drinks the Docks bowling options were reduced when Paddy Young injured a finger on his bowling hand when fielding a ball - he stayed on the field but was obviously in some discomfort. Hopefully the injury will only be a short term one.
Drinks seemed to galvanize the Clacton batters who tried to open up against Sam Handley ( we need to get a nickname for you Sam) and Gaukey, who had replaced the openers, however, these two didn't let this mini revival faze them, continuing to work on bowling in the right areas. Their efforts were rewarded with wickets starting to tumble as Clacton realised they were some way off a par total.
The spin twins weren't helped by the steady drizzle that started after about 30 overs had been bowled. in fact the ball got so wet that their attempts at bowling their usual actions had to be shelved in preference to a more pragmatic approach. Clearly this gave the batsmen a big advantage but credit to them for keeping going.
Credit also to the effort in the field where Archie was again outstanding.
Clacton finished on 178/8 after their 45 overs with Sam and the chairman bagging 3 wickets apiece.
As the drizzle cleared, an enjoyable tea followed. Discussion centred around the number of locals who had discovered a new footpath across the playing area, oblivious to the fact that a game of cricket was taking place. Reuben had actually been keeping count and announced that the correct figure was 11.

The Docksters innings opened up with Reuben and the coach, who told me before the match, "the coach feels pretty good about the coaches form at the moment." (And so the third person speaking continues !)
Unfortunately the usually solid base the openers provide didn't materialise and Taylor was back in the hutch after a what he later described as 'an injudicious shot by the coach.'
Reuben, whose counting, we learnt, does not just amount to the number of nutters who walk nonchalantly across the playing field whilst a game in progress, but also to the number of runs he has scored as a Copdock and OI player, played a few classy shots before chasing one and edging to the keeper. As a result, the 45 runs he needed to complete 3000 for the club weren't quite achieved today.

So at 36 for 2 the pressure was on Sam WS and Ricey, not that you would have known it. Sam was soon into his stride punishing anything slightly wayward and soon moving onto 50. Ricey looked equally solid and these two put on over a hundred in next to no time.
Ricey was moving towards a well deserved fifty when he was bowled, giving young Sam H the chance to see the Crusaders home. Unfortunately Sam, too, got a good one early in his innings so it was left to the Olympic Record holder Ted Baker to steady the ship and see the scoobies home. Any fears of a Dock wobble were quickly put to rest as Sam reached a well deserved ton with a classy push through mid wicket and then won the match with the shot of the day, a beautifully timed classical extra cover drive for 4.

So, all in all, a comfortable victory and a good all round performance with ball and bat. A big pat on the back to Gaukey and Sam H for their tenacity when bowling in the precipitation, disappointment for Paddy whose injury prevented him from bowling and also for Archie, who didn't get a chance to continue his good form with the bat, however, my Man of the match this week only has one real contender - Sam WS for his superb unbeaten ton and a top class performance behind the sticks.

Good work lads - we now have a week off before taking on IES.
