Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Wivenhoe II on Mon 27 May 2013 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Chef Smith has Wivenhoe on Toast !
As Copdock 2nds completed their second win of the Bank Holiday weekend, it was the Gordon Ramsey of Henley who gave a Masterchefs class in accurate seam bowling to ensure a tasty victory for the home side.
A glorious sunny day greeted the two teams at the Copdock Oval as the Dock welcomed Wivenhoe for(yet another) must win game.
A number of changes were made from Saturdays team - Banham, Catchpole, Rice, Allerton and Taylor were unavailable for varying reasons so in came Dutch Holland, Ed Pope, Felix Ward (fresh from his match winning century for the Sunday 1s the previous day), Jamie (Delia) Smith, (playing his first course for the Sat 2s this season) and Kris Bostock, a new recruit with an excellent pedigree, of whom great things are hoped (no pressure there then Kris !)
With such a strong batting lineup, on a pitch being used for the fourth time, much was made of winning the sauté sorry toss and electing to bat. Of course, Gunder couldn't get that right and, Andrew Golding, the Wivenhoe Captain unsurprisingly, decided his team would like to make first use of the track.
Felix opened the bowling and exhibited super pace and control in his opening spell. At the other end the Wivenhoe batters tucked in to Gunder's assortment of slow half volleys. Thankfully, Felix castled the opener with a beauty and Ned Kelly fell to a catch by Reuben in the covers. This was, however, just the hors d'ouevres to what was to follow.
Although Wivenhoes run rate, on a seemingly flat Oval pitch, was over 5 an over they continued to lose wickets with Ed Pope dismissing the dangerous Tonkinson and Jamie (Oliver), delivering the goods from the top end. Jamie's recipe for success was to keep his menu of deliveries very simple - bowl it straight and don't give the batters any width with which to tuck into.
Whilst Popey continued to make things difficult for all the Wivenhoe batsmen, without any luck, course after course of the batting side fell to the Singing Chef, simmering with intent and getting his just desserts.
Delia completed a fantastic spell of 14.3 overs, 7/37 - the large crowd, expecting a feast of cricket were doing a la cartwheels as they gorged on the veritable banquet of bowling they were served.
Wivenhoes innings ended at 157 all out with Jamie awarded a Michelin Star whilst Popey and Felix also deserve a couple of AA Rosettes for their efforts.
Tea was enjoyed in the sunshine and before long we were out batting. Again it was Reuben, this time with Dutch as his partner, who got us off to the flying start which always settles the nerves. They didn't allow any of the Wivenhoe bowlers to settle and put on a fine opening stand before Dutch missed Goldings slower one.
This allowed Kris Bostock to come to the wicket. He looked classy for his brief cameo before falling to a shot that had a tinge of rustiness to it ! (Kris has hardly played over the last couple of season). There was, however, enough to see in his stay that suggested good things to come.
Again it was left to two youngsters, Felix and Archie to see us home. Felix looked very comfortable, punishing anything slightly loose, and Archie, batting with real purpose and positivity, gave himself the time to get settled before batting too expansively.
So the Dock won by 7 wickets with 17 overs to spare and can feel very pleased with themselves for a very professional all round performance, picking up the maximum 20 points in the process.
As seems to be the case at the moment it was unfortunate that a number of players didn't get the opportunity to bat or bowl - it is a sign of the clubs growing strength in depth that batters such as London 2012's Adam Baker, Cuffy, Ed Pope and Gaukey didn't get off the bench and that Gaukey didn't get the chance to bowl. As the season develops their chance will come again but their efforts for the club are much appreciated.
Some good performances today but one stand out choice from this weeks menu as to who was man of the match - Chef Smith gains the plaudits for his delicious offerings.
Next week we are away to Clacton !
