Match report Decisions Decisions Decisions

The 2nds made the relatively short trip to face Mistley 2s and came away well beaten following a lacklustre display. Hopes of continuing the unbeaten run were dashed as Mistley outperformed the Dock in all aspects.

And yet it had all seemed so positive in the build up to the game. We had a batting lineup to die for including at least 9 potential opening batsmen, plenty of bowling options, youth, experience and quality throughout the side.

Although the day was overcast, the pitch was dry and looked good, and the forecast didn't indicate much change in conditions, the captain, won the toss and decided to bat first. Would this prove to be the correct decision ?
Openers Sharpe and Pope made a solid start, seeing off the seamers, however, once the slower bowlers were introduced, the scoring rate started to drop. Popey tried to break the shackles but only succeeded in lobbing a catch to mid on and was out for a solid 39. Coming in at 3, Kev Banham was able manoeuvre the spinners around, executing his trademark sweep wherever possible, and hopes of achieving a par total were reinvigorated. This proved something of a false dawn as although the Dock were still only two wickets down at the 39 over mark - unfortunately there were only 107 runs on the board !
As the situation became increasingly desperate, batsmen came and went in an effort to post a defendable score, the one bright spot being a wonderful strike by Dutch over cover point for 6 from his first ball. Unfortunately this was the only bright spot and the score limped to a meagre 138/8. Even our very own Olympic record holder, Ted Baker, didn't have enough time to get the team up to a higher total.

Bearing in mind most scores at Mistley this season have been well in excess of 200 tea was taken in somewhat sombre mood.

The bowling and fielding was much better and, whilst clearly we were up against it, in terms of defending our small total, the effort was certainly not lacking. Jamie Green (Man) bowled with nice rhythm and was getting into a lovely 'groove' when he had to finish his spell due to age restrictions. Banham, with a tweaked fetlock, was solid and Sam H, despite being put under more pressure than in previous weeks, showed a strong character, bowling with increasing control as his spell developed. Soggy's probing 4 over burst at the end indicated that he may be asked to bowl longer spells in the weeks ahead.

Unfortunately, as was feared, we never had enough runs to defend and Mistley ended up comfortably chasing the 139 needed with over 8 overs to spare.

As for a man of the match, unless someone can come up with a case for anyone, no one seems deserving of the award this week.

Should we have batted first ? What is the best batting order ? Do we need more seam bowling options ? All of these are questions being mulled over as we approach a double header weekend with home games on Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday. We simply must get back to winning ways to get our season back on track.
