Scorecard

Woolpit v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Under 13 Crusaders on Tue 22 May 2012 at 6pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 2 runs

Match report Copdock Phoenix posted a second consecutive League win with a gutsy performance away to Woolpit. With only 10 players, Captain Zach Puckey was relieved when having lost the toss Woolpit naively put Phoenix in to bat.

In a stuttering start for Phoenix wickets began to tumble with only James Meakin really triubling the scorers as Woolpits two pronged bowling attack set about their work. In the blink of an eye Copdock were reduced to 4 for 28 in 5 overs. Some loose bowling in the middle overs Woolpit allowed Phoenix to creep to 41 before two quick wickets reduced the visitors to 6 for 41 in 9 overs.

Up stepped the first two Copdock Bowlers to dig the batsmen out of the mire! Oscar Taylor and Tommy Downie fought back well blocking out the best of the Woolpit bowlers forcing them to bowl wider and wider which resulted in a steady flow of runs and particularly wide balls. Taylor and Downie put together a partnership of 34 before Downie fell in the 18th over. Sensing blood Woolpits two pronged county attack trapped both tailenders without either adding to the Copdock total. With no No11, Copdock finished with a modest total of 75.

Woolpits innings got off to a reasonable start with an almost identical run out opportunity to that which had started Copdock's innings. Surviving the early scare clearly rattled Woolpits batters as wickets fell in the third and fourth overs to a an inspired run out pinged in by Greg Bott and some neat bowling from Oscar Taylor.

The middle over bowling attack of eight overs between Wijnberg and Downie really pinned back the woolpit score rate with some inspired bowling by Tommy Downie seeing him return figures of 4-2-5-2 and another text book run out by Sam Gillespie which reduced woolpit to 33 for 5 off 12 overs.

Game on!!

In a similar pattern to that of the Phoenix innings the bowlers (in this case county players) began to appear at the crease and Woolpit began to turn the screw which led to some nervous overs where the run rate began to soar. With 3 overs to go Woolpit needed 16 to win with 4 wickets in hand.

Over 18 saw Woolpit reduce the defecit to 9 albeit for the loss of a wicket to Finlay Shorten.

Over 19 saw another wicket fall with the deficit reduced to 7 to win, Sam Williams picking up his first wicket of the season.

In the final over Oscar Taylor took the 9th wicket on the fourth ball of the over having conceded one run and a bye. Woolpit had 1 wicket in hand and needed 5 to win. Oscars fifth ball cannoned into the stumps only to be ruled a no-ball on height. Two balls to come and three to win. Sixth ball - dot ball, one to come three to win...

Seventh ball. The Woolpit batsman gets the faintest of edges which squirts out to backward point. The batsmen scramble one and turn looking for two - but the ball is safely in the hands of Joe Williams inches from the stumps ending the game and Woolpits efforts to turn over Phoenix's score of 75 two runs short.

Copdock Man of the Match - probably could have gone Tommy Downie for some inspired bowling, it could have also gone to the whole team for the way they fielded as a unit, but eventually it was agreed that MoM should go to Oscar Taylor for holding the Copdock Innings together and for dipslaying a level of maturity in the last over well above that of someone his own age.
