Match report
COPDOCK CRUSADERS STORM CASTLE PARK.
Steve Gauke, Chairman, has been looking forward to this fixture all year following the trifle and ice cream at tea last year. It once again delivered as one of the better days of the year! Copdock had a relatively strong team, were bolstered by a large security presence to keep nose out of trouble.
Captain Thomas, tossed with his lunch in hand as Crame had demanded he stopped for cash, Crame was furious when there was no cashback or no cashpoint, he even told the lady to the amusement of the queue. Thomas lost the toss and was overjoyyed to be told he was to bat, hoping that he wouldnt have to get his kit out until tea time. However his early boundary boules lap was interupted by another wicket. The skipper opted to open up with Green and Sharpe. Green failed to add to his 796 runs in all forms of cricket for the club this year. Sharpe looking like Phil Mitchell after a night on heroin, failed to last much longer unsurprisingly falling in the 3rd over, caught cover pulling, the shot that has caused him so many problems over the years.
East and Crame looked to rebuild and Crame had a regulation chance grassed at 2nd slip by the man who has sub fielded for England A. East fell to a regulation caught behind, chasing a wide one. Nose really should look to work at his game outside his off stump, perhaps the reason as to his lack of runs for the year. Nose you still haven't set up that standing order for all the money you still owe me for not scoring 600 runs, (where's my fiver pidge??).
Crame slapped one to mid on, and Gravell missed a straight one, so copdock were left 48-5, when the two senior batsmen, Swallow and Thomas came together after giving everyone else a bat. They built and milked the singles whilst nicking the odd boundary, a phase of proper one day cricket. The pair put on 74 for the sixth wicket, taking the score to 122. Swallow eventually flapped one to mid wicket, thankfully only playing a handful of sweep shots. Westaway came and smote a few, but departed for 8. Burch came in with Thomas and had a little look before Burch played an excellent supporting role as Thomas went Viking for the Crusaders. Burch nudged his way helping to put on 63 with Thomas. Thomas eventually departed in the last over for 66 from 71.
Copdock finished 198-8, not a bad total from 48-5. Tea delivered once again, with pizza, wedges, cakes, ice cream, cheesecake. Just a feast, even former first XI captain John East turned up, at tea to enjoy the feast.
First ball of the C&EE innings, the pacey East struck the C&EE opener on the toe. From then on he batted strangely, looking to blat it and ran strangely. Green and East bowled tightley giving little away, and only got the break through, after leaving square leg on the boundary for east, the "injured" foster pushed for two running his partner out. Genius. Soon after the outgoing batsman resumed as a runner and Foster and McQueen built a partnership, until foster tried to persuade his runner to take a single to the sharp Thomas at fine leg. at drinks at 90-2 the hosts looked well placed. A double strike from the economical Druitt soon after drinks put Copdock back in the game. Jamie Green finished his 8 overs economical, with a positive of James Burch looking sharp standing up to him.
Steve Gauke, came on to finish from the Fire Station end, looking to bowl tight. It ended up being a spell of Jenkin like tail squashing, mopping up the tail with 6-23. As remarkable as this spell was, the fact that Reuben Sharpe in the state he was in took two catches, one a tidy grab at DBSL.
As captain I would like to thank my 5 extra captains in the field, if any of them wish to come forward to take over the job next year it would be much appreciated.
A good win, slightly marred, by a bunch of drugged up hippies having a musical festival in the next door park. Some awful music at times, a sign of the hippidy hoppidy generation that such could be allowed to ruin a game of cricket in such a serene setting. Although Chris Swallow got overexcited with a bit of funk.
A tremendous win, and another win next week against Abberton could see us finish above Colchester and East Essex.
