Match report
J. EAST BOWLS LAST OVER FOR LESS THAN 18!
The day started strangely, with Sharpe only making one mistake in touch rugby. Spirits were high after the news J.P. East had been left out, leaving J.R. East, almost the oldest player on field, thankfully Simmonds and Siegert turned up!
Captain Swallow lost a toss and Copdock were inserted to bat on a green looking Copdock Oval surface, looked sure to help the 8 prong spin attack. Suffolk's newest minor counties player opened up with one of the more seasoned, Ward getting a life first ball of the day. Swallow thus followed by missing a straight one from Coetzee, LBW, B. Gravell thought it looked pretty out. The King of Gondor returned for 16, looking like the fort at Minas Tirith in defence, but attacked like a flurry of Hobbitts. Thomas came out and hung around like Helms Deep, areas of Weakness, but just about hung on, to see off the seaming new ball. Gravell eventually found first slip, bringing out Nel, who had an uncharacteristic look at a few early on, before blatting Coetzee everywhere. In what can only be described as shocking, Nel was given out LBW to Simmonds waltzing down the track. From this point Copdock looked as if they were going to struggle to make 200. Sharpe and Thomas ground away, until the latter missed a straight one from Reece. Nose had a visitor, however he was out, making more friends. Jenkin smashed it everywhere, sharpe did the decent thing and gave his wicket away. Hugo "pidge" Gravell came out and played a couple of reverse dabs, about which the captain got a little carried away. Jenkin smashed copdock to 145 all out, thankfully not offering sudbury any extra overs.
Tea came and went allbeit swiftly. No great events, bar Sharpe having Tikka sauce on his cheek for over half the time.
Into the field, the all spinning Copdock, almost took a very early wicket, but for a very very strange set of circumstances. Jenkin bowled flat, normal, fat left hander charged him, normal, fat ugly left hander missed it, normal, Thomas caught it, normal(ish), Thomas missed the bails. The most embarrasing moment of his career bar the run out at Maldon in 2007, after dropping his bat and trying to put his hand in the crease. Shameful. Soon after swallow had him caught and bowled. Jenkin accounted for 2 and 3, the second dismissal can only be described as an act of genius. Nicked to East at slip, who moved sharply to his left, it flew, after 8 bobbles, East moved and reverse cupped it with a fully rotated arm, to get an impression, try and catch a ball with the hairy side of your forearm facing the ground!
Batch and Coetzee, arguably the oppositions two premier players came together and this was the match defining partnership. Both were given lives, but Batch was soon accounted for by East, caught unlikely by Hugo Gravell. Good grabbing kiddo! Into the nervous nineties went sudbury and so did their middle order, collapsing into Jenkins tail squashing hands. East bowled tightly as did Swallow. needing 30 to win with 3 wickets in hand it could have gone either way, it was off 18 overs, the tightest of spin bowling slowed it right down. Sudbury needed 7 off the last over to win. This time the East that can handle pressure stepped up to the plate. His last over included a couple of brave 23mph balls. Needing one off the last with the scored level, Copdock left out mid wicket for the leg side heave. East held his nerve; bowling a leg stump full toss, which the batsman spooned up to A.Gravell at deep mid wicket, making up for an earlier drop, a master stroke! TIED...
A Great game of poor cricket, with the ball (and umpiring) dominating throughout. But readers don't be misled, by the thought that the umpired were biased or cheated, just genuinely poor throughout, with both sides at times feeling aggrieved.
The futures bright, the futures even. exactly...
