Match report A big thank you to all players and supporters (and logistic managers!), especially Adam in the score box: we could do with some more volunteers please.

Unfortunately, it did not turn out to be a close match this time, but there was plenty of good cricket on show, no shortage of effort with just 7 on each side, as well as (shall we say) many “opportunities for learning”.

Hawks, batting first, took 98 off the bat, the majority coming from Orlando Church with a rare Super 8’s 50 off just 21 balls. Despite the number of boundaries, the Lions fielded well, with a very capable performance by Finlay Blemings behind the stumps and bowled exceptionally, lead by captain Sam Field (12 for 1 off 3 overs), backed up by Charlie Kerr (16 for 2 off 3) and George Percival (6 for 0 off 3). There was a remarkable sequence of six overs (a complete rotation of bowlers), without a wicket, but which went for only 9 runs (including four maidens), which was ultimately the game winner.

The Lions took a very similar 94 runs off the bat, again lead by Sam with 39 runs off 25 balls, but everyone chipped in and kept the scoreboard ticking over and they were already in the lead with 5 overs to go. The Hawks fielding was energetic and effective, well marshalled by captain Arthur East, who also lead the bowling with 2 wickets, with a very good performance from Orlando behind the stumps. Unfortunately the Hawks were ultimately let down by the number of wides and could not prevent the Lions running out as clear winners.

The league matches will start in a couple of weeks’ time and hopefully we will take forward the energy and learning from these warm-up matches. The key to success in this format (where critically we never run out of wickets) is consistency with the bowling and constant pressure with the bat, always looking for and taking runs.
