Match report A big thanks to everyone for getting the kids to the ground on-time on Friday which enabled us to get a full match in before the light started to fade and special thanks to Adam Blemings and James Southgate doing the business in our new junior scorebox and Mughees Mohsin umpiring out in the wind at square leg.

Having an up to date scoreboard was certainly a great help in maintaining the tension towards the end of the match. Will’s team (Hawks) were at that point cruising toward a comfortable victory, requiring just 16 off the last 5 overs, but suddenly after a series of late wickets were left needing 24 off the last six balls and despite a great effort in the last over (including the only six of the match off the last ball) fell just short. A good lesson in never giving up in these matches and never thinking the win will just come to you.

All-in-all probably our best first U11 match of the season for a long time. Normally it’s a festival of overthrows, four-byes and batters ending up at the same end, so it’s great that we’ve hit the ground running with a lot of cricketing skill and guile on show: we should be in a good position to be playing competitively by the time we’re playing other clubs.

The scores for the two teams: Hawks (captained by Will) and Lions (captained by Archie) are both now on the website. There are too many good performances either batting or bowling to pick anyone out in particular here (you know who you are).

Both teams batted positively, reaching the desired standard of at least a run a ball off the bat, whilst the fielding was also both energetic and thoughtful. The bowling was especially encouraging with several bowlers coming back from a relatively poor first over to greatly improve in their second or third over.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed the match and will be looking forwards to the next. I will be arranging some more early season warm-up matches, but will be trying to get all the U11s playing at least one practice match before the league matches start in a few week's time, so please bear with me if you are not selected for the next match. I will be trying to ensure that all U11 players get a good number of matches this year, so please do put in your availability/unavailability for upcoming U11 matches on the website, if you haven't already done so. This helps me enormously in putting together balanced teams, whilst it goes without saying (although I will anyway) that this will improve your chances of being selected; volunteering to help out with scoring will also of course help greatly.
