Match report After Felixstowe withdrew from the scheduled match on Friday morning, given that the pitch had already been prepared (thanks Martin) and it wasn't forecast to rain for once, I was determined that the boys got some match time. Taking six willing volunteers from U9 training (thanks Paul), and nabbing a coach to do the scoring at square leg (thanks Jack), we picked two seven a-side teams (using the old school playground technique), with brothers Will and Archie Southgate captaining the teams.

Archie's side batted first, making 111 for 9 wickets (including 3 run-outs), aided by a number of overthrows. Shlok top scored with 14 off 15 balls, whilst the bowling was lead by Sam, who took 3 wickets for 14 of 3 overs.

Will's side set off, already on 45 runs for the nine wickets taken, scoring steadily and creeping ahead of the required rate (also helped by a number of overthrows, despite one being saved inadvertently by the umpire's groin: ouch) but also lost wickets regularly. Whilst Archie's side came back with some late wickets (nine in all), a late flurry of boundaries (six fours and two sixes) from brother Will (who top scored on 40 off 25 balls) got his team over the line. The best bowling came from Shlok (3 for 4 off 3 overs) and Isaac (3 for 5 off 3 overs), with a special mention to young Jake, who coming off his Bob Willis run in from the boundary, took 2 for 21, including the wicket of his brother Sam, which probably made for an interesting journey home afterwards.

Subsequently after the match, I realised that we had been fooled by the number of players and Archie's side only faced 16 overs rather than 18, so I have made a back of an envelope Dukworth-Lewis calculation and whilst Will's team still won, this was only by a solitary run.

All in all, a fun match played in very good spirit, by boys of quite an age range, but all equals on the field. Lots of runs scored and wickets taken (and overthrows thrown!) and we even managed to finish before the rain came in. A good result for Copdock!
