Easton v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Copdock Phoenix U11 on Tue 19 Jul 2022 at 6pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 21 runs

Match report On the hottest evening on record, a patched-up Phoenix team of seven (drawn from across the Phoenix, Hawks Lions and Eagles squads) arrived at Easton without a wicketkeeper (at mid-day we had two!) and two players who only found out they were playing that afternoon; three including U13 Jack Calder, who agreed to help out in the field for our captain (younger brother Max), even though he was unfortunately not allowed to bat or bowl.

Taking the field first, Copdock bowled very well and regularly took wickets; notably a nonchalant one-handed catch by Aiden off Thapas and three wickets in an over from Sankalp. Unfortunately, whilst the fielding was sharp 90% of the time and despite stoic performances with the gloves (and under the helmet in the extreme heat), from our two ‘volunteer’ rookie wicketkeepers Sankalp and Thapas, there were a number of additional boundaries from byes, wides and overthrows, which rather flattered the Easton batting score of 143, and were the difference in the end.

However, starting on 35 for our seven wickets, and with most of the field now in shade, the boys batted well, placing their shots and running energetically and aggressively: of the three run-outs, one was to a superb direct hit and the others were in the dying overs when chasing 26 off the last two overs. Unfortunately, those late wickets meant that the game went away from us at the end, with Phoenix losing by 21 runs.

Our best bowling was from Sankalp with 3 wickets for 11 off 3 overs. Obviously the 12 overs warming up under the helmet did him good! Batting-wise Max, Sankalp and Thapas all scored at more than a run a ball, with Sankalp top scoring with 22 off 15 balls.

Thanks to all the players, who did really well in the heat, Jack for selflessly helping out in the field and to Mark for his impeccable scoring, as ever.
