Match report Copdock Swan Dive

On a remarkably humid and sunny September day. Copdock made the lengthy journey to picturesque settings of Mistley CC. The day started well when the captain managed to get three people and two cricket bags in the smallest car in the world. It got even better, when the captain won the toss and had a bat. In a game reduced to 40 overs, the power hitting of Gunderwood was drafted to the top of the order. Gunderwood, took a liking to the pace bowling of J.Manning, and broke some roof tiles in an early onslaught, before playing all round a straight ball. Burch ran himself out in standard fashion, whilst Archie decided he didn't want to bat any more and straight from the Reuben Sharpe textbook, he ran down the track and left the ball. Hugo had also been watching Sharpe as he attempted to cut a straight half volley.
It was left to the Captain and East to repair the damage of some loose batting from the top order. After a partnership of 35 was broken by East holing out to cover, having called for his lid, scared, of the worlds slowest bowler. Copdock, limped to 173-9, credit must go to the cat, d'accord le Chat, for his fine 27* not out, and Burchy got some stick about has Dad!!

Into a good tea, the highlight of which were Roystons T-Bone Steak Bubble Chips, an excellent throwback. I think at this stage I'm going to decide on my tea of the year. Abberton and Copford have been good, the hot potato wedges at Abberton, excellent, and the quantity and variety of Copfords Tea a fine addition. But, those who played will probably agree, that at Colchester and East Essex, the Hot Pizza, Hot Potato Wedges, Chicken Nuggets followed by lashings of Trifle and Ice Cream took the honours. Congratulations Colchester and East Essex, I think tea ratings should be included in post match captains paperwork.

Into the field we went, expecting a tough defence ahead. I have to say I quite enjoyed the first 10 overs. James East tore in from the Graveyard end (not the end he got five of the rest of the world out from, as James Holmes had choice of ends in that game). Manning decided to pretend James was John, and kept coming down the track to him. James not being John, lacked the guile to out fox Manning and kept getting whacked. Thankfully Oliver Gravell maintained an element of control from the Bowls Club end. Spin was brought into the attack relatively early, and after getting a bit of tap early Druitt and Catlow produced two fine spells. The game seemed to ebb and flow, but whilst Mistley had wickets in hand, it largely looked like their game! Thomas probably missed a trick by not bringing Gauke into the attack earlier who bowled 5.1 good overs taking 2-14.

Once again, Copdock lost the game as they failed to score enough runs. The lack of quality batting at the top of the order has cost us dear. In general we've been a young side, and we've made the mistakes of a young team. It would have been nice to go out on a high, but due to Coggeshall's cancellation thats not possible. Ultimately I hope the young players have learned from our mistakes and that it will make them better cricketers. Can I also thank Steve Gauke for all his help with the team this year.

Over and Out.

See you all at the dinner.
