Long Melford v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 02 May 2009 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 5 runs

Match report Following a rather dull affair the previous week against Woolpit we travelled to Long Melford where our recent fortunes have been favourable.

Fielding a decent 2nd XI outfit we batted first. With the first new ball of the day the Woolpit attack moved it in the air and off the pitch and accounted for Sharpe (3) and Baker (7). Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Pope however showed some early optimism and struck the ball well. With some useful support from Cuff (40) and Wootten (33) he managed to carry his bat in an excellent unbeaten 112. If you think he at any stage was batting for an average I can confirm this was not the case. This was clearly evidenced but Pope’s running between the wickets that was at times poop. Together we posted a healthy 225.

Steve Catchpole returned to the Copdock & Oi’s attack. He and fellow opener Gravell saw off the Woolpit openers.

Sky Sport/News were nowhere to be seen on this delightfully sunny afternoon in Suffolk, and what a shame. For what we were about to witness was nothing short of Magnificent. Our very own Kevin Banham whose Copdock career is long and successful provided a very entertaining interlude as he attempted to field the ball at square leg. The ball was struck toward him; it caressed the neatly manicured surface like powder on a baby’s bottom. Kevin as he chased the ball didn’t quite match this elegance. Following his eighth stride in chase his head begun to dip like a 100 meter sprinter. Clearly not in control of the weight of his upper body Kevin quickly surrendered the chase. Without time to brake his fall his he hit the deck with the right hand side of his face using his right arm that was caught under his body as a brake. He picked himself up in disbelief and looked for a large whole in the ground. Well done Kev you made my day!!!!

Woolpit recovered well and Melford’s skipper Hale ably assisted by Wright began to chase in good fashion. Druitt and Catlow took some tap and the boat began to rock. Infact the game was very much in the balance until Catchpole returned for a single over second spell and stopped the rot. The game was finished on the penultimate delivery of the day during an accurate last 6 balls from Gravell.

The second good win of the season well done!
