Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 25 runs
Match report
Copdocks Eagles Win Last Match of the Season and Take the League Title
A handsome win for an Eagles team, which included a number of 'special guests' picked on the day from other squads, due to absences.
Despite the early morning deluge, Martin was as ever fully prepared and was able to save the protected pitch with the application of some sawdust, just in time for the arrivals of St. Margarets, who were fully expecting the game to be called off. Copdock 1, British weather 0.
Batting first, openers Jevon and Isaac batted steadily and positively, with Jevon carrying on in this vein to eventually retire not out on 17 off 16 fair deliveries, after Isaac fell to the first of only two wickets in the innings. At the fall of the first wicket, Algie then started the main Eagles onslaught, striking his first three balls to the boundary and finishing on an unbeaten 39 off 17 fair deliveries.
Captain Lucas and 'local boy' Arthur continued in the same style, both retiring not out for 30 and 29 respectively. Notably, the majority of Lucas's runs came in the two overs that dad Scott, who had volunteered to umpire, was off the field answering the call of nature (parents take note!). George carried on the more than a run a ball scoring rate until falling to a run-out in the last over of the innings, with the Eagles finishing on a very creditable 157 for 2, given the very good St. Margarets fielding: a run rate of 8.7 per over, with 50% of those runs coming from boundaries (and only 16% from extras).
The St. Margarets innings started solidly with both openers retiring not out, scoring at around 7 an over, laying the platform for a big score, and with none of our bowlers making an early impact. However, from that point on, the Eagles started to take regular wickets, despite bowling an annoying number of extras (accounting for 28% of the St. Margarets score), but making sure that the opposition never kicked off from their good start. Pick of the bowlers were Harry Gledhill with three wickets for 16 runs and William Woods with 2 wickets for 17 runs, ably supported with some miserly overs from Isaac, George and Arthur.
Captain Lucas impressively marshalled the fielders, who crucially cut off several boundaries, and with no runs added on overthrows. Star fielder was Arthur, taking three stunning catches which slowed the opposition scoring rate at vital times. St. Margarets finished with a bit of a flourish from the returning Joel, but the damage had already been done and they fell 25 runs short on 132 for 6.
Overall, a good victory achieved through positive batting and application in the field. The standard of cricket, from both sides, was notably improved from the start of the season.
This means that the Eagles run out as winners of the Super Eights League D; their only loss being an early season 59 run drubbing by the Copdock Hawks. Well done everyone.
Thanks to Scott for umpiring and Ewan for scoring.
