Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Under 15 Boys Players 2024 v Sudbury on Wed 03 May 2017 at 6pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 132 runs

Match report Our first match in the Super Eights format unfortunately turned out to be a bit of a mismatch, as we faced a young U13 team (many of whom were probably U11's) from Sudbury. To their credit, Sudbury played with great spirit and good humour, sportingly allowing us to bat out our 18 overs so the boys could (nearly) all have a bat, even though Kajeai had already smashed his way to the required total after 5 overs. They also had a very vocal captain in young Lucy who was constantly encouraging and advising her team and never let their heads drop, despite being on the wrong end of a drubbing: an example to all.

Fielding first, Copdock, captained by James Whittle, covered the ground effectively, leaking only 5 boundaries, with misfields counted on the fingers of one hand. Not at all bad for the first match of a season, which normally has the coaches pulling their hair out. Particularly pleasing was to see great backing up and an absence of wild and unnecessary overthrows: those years of fielding drills are paying dividends.

A great and miserly team bowling performance, with wickets shared around, and last minute call-up Shaanjeai returning the best figures of 1 for 1 off his allotted three overs.

With a modest total of 61 to beat, Kajeai set off at furious IPLesque pace, his 38 not out setting a stiff target for the number of runs off the permitted 20 balls this season. Tom Licence (32), James Whittle (24) and Ewan Green (21) also all scored at more than a run a ball, which must surely be the aim in in this game format.

After reaching the required total in five overs, the scoring rate stayed pretty constant throughout the innings, with Copdock eventually amassing a massive total of 193 runs, for what turned out to be an easy win.

Great credit must go to the Sudbury team for keeping their heads up throughout despite the one-way traffic and hopefully they got something out of it. Whilst it is early days, hopefully, during the season, clubs will come to grips with the new age groups and match formats.
